Job description

The Department of Microeconomics and Public Economics (MPE) at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University intends to create two personal full-time chairs in the broad fields of Microeconomics and Public Economics. The personal chairs will be established for a period of 5 years, with the possibility of extension as well as conversion into a permanent chair. The aim of the chair is to strengthen the department and faculty by making a significant contribution to their strategic goals.

The candidate should make a significant contribution in the maintenance of the high standard and further development in research and teaching in – at least – one of the fields covered by MPE: behavioral and experimental economics, microeconomic theory, and public economics. In addition, we expect the candidate to show academic leadership, be active in the acquisition of external funding and contribute to the creation of societal impact.

Both senior and more junior candidates are encouraged to apply. A senior candidate is expected to have an excellent and relevant research profile and to be an internationally recognized researcher. For more junior candidates proven research performance and potential are crucial. The candidate must be firmly embedded in relevant international research networks. We expect a candidate to play an active and stimulating role in the relevant SBE and UM research themes. The level of experience with academic teaching can also vary with a candidate’s seniority. In all cases, the candidate must be a proven and dedicated teacher, with an interest in applying the Problem Based Learning (PBL) system used at SBE.

The candidate will be one of the senior faculty members within the department, which also has a substantial amount of junior researchers/lecturers and PhD candidates. This requires the ability to motivate and coach young researchers to perform high-profile research and teaching. We expect the candidate to be a team player and a team builder, who is willing to fulfill senior administrative/managerial tasks either at the department or school level.

Since this is a personal chair, a more detailed performance agreement will be drafted for the five-year tenure of the chair. Its content will depend on the background and experience of the candidate as well as the intended focus of the candidate’s contribution to the department and SBE.
