Job description

Nikhef, the national institute for subatomic physics in The Netherlands, has an opening for a Postdoc in Experimental particle Physics (ALICE)

The Nikhef organization
Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in The Netherlands. Approximately 195 physicists and 75 technical staff members work together in an open and international scientific environment. They perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics. The institute represents a collaboration between six Dutch universities and the Dutch Foundation for Scientific Research (NWO).
Nikhef participates in large research collaborations, including the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon1T dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso, the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina and the eEDM research programme in Groningen. Nikhef also hosts groups in Theoretical physics, Physics Data Processing and Detector R&D, all with excellent connections to the (astro)particle physics community.

The position
The ALICE groups at Nikhef and the Utrecht University are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with an interest in the experimental study of the Quark Gluon Plasma high-energy nuclear collisions, in particular using so-called hard probes, i.e. to understand the interactions of heavy quarks and jets with the plasma and to use them to measure the density and temperature of the plasma. The candidate is expected to have experience with data analysis in high-energy heavy-ion experiments. Candidates with a strong background in the theoretical modelling of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions and an interest to explore these phenomena in close contact with an experimental group will also be considered. The successful applicant is expected to carry their own research program in close collaboration with the permanent staff, to contribute to common tasks within the ALICE collaboration, and to play a role in the supervision of PhD students in the group.
