Job description

The School of Law of Utrecht University’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance is working on intensifying small-scale education for the purpose of strengthening the skills component within the bachelor’s curriculum and the master’s programmes. This is done by intensifying education and by establishing a Legal Skills Academy, where knowledge and expertise in the field of legal, academic and professional skills are combined. For the department of International and European Law we are hiring a lecturer (Assistant Professor) “education in the field of International and European Law”.
This lecturer will strengthen and continue legal (skills) education at the School of Law, both in the bachelor’s curriculum and in the master’s programmes. Also, the candidate will carry out academic research into education and innovation (for example on the basis of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)). The candidate is broadly orientated, demonstrates academic leadership and has experience in the field of didactics. The candidate will have the opportunity to shape an educationally specific development programme, including the following of courses and submitting innovation proposals (for example within the framework of the Utrecht Education Incentive Fund, the national Comenius Programme, Surf, and the like). 

The following tasks are envisaged:
  • You will teach within the department of International and European Law of the School of Law with emphasis on the development, integration, maintaining and testing of legal-academic skills.
  • You will be a part of the Legal Skills Academy (LSA), where you will be responsible for the development and the maintenance of knowledge concerning academic skills in legal education, by way of, for example, the development of didactic tools for lecturers (feedback, peer feedback, (writing) skills instructions as well as carrying out research into education and educational innovation.
  • You will support your colleagues at the School of Law, if requested by the development and implementation of skills in the courses and programmes organised by them.
  • You will coordinate the activities of the LSA, together with your colleagues of the Legal Skills Academy, and take care of external communications concerning the LSA.

Requirements

For this post a number of aspects are important:
  • You have followed and completed legal education and hold a doctorate (PhD), preferably with an International or European Law profile.
  • You have a good command of Dutch ( minimum B2 CEFR level) and English ( C1-C2 CEFR level).
  • You have experience in teaching legal education (in Dutch and English).
  • You have a teaching qualification, such as a University Teaching Qualification or an Advanced University Teaching Qualification, or a similar qualification. If you do not possess such a qualification, we will offer you the opportunity to gain this qualification, preferably within a period of one year.
  • It is required that you have (extensive) experience in carrying out educational scholarship
  • You work with enthusiasm and you have strong communication skills.

In our assessment of your application, we pay particular attention to your ideas with regard to innovation in legal education.

Conditions of employment

This is an appointment of 1.0 FTE for the duration of one year. In case of a good performance, an indefinite employment is one of the possibilities.
The minimum gross salary is € 3,974,- and the maximum gross salary is € 5,439,- (scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment. Besides that, you will receive a holiday allowance of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %. The department International and European Law (IER) of the Utrecht School of Law is responsible for education and research in the field of international public law, European law, social law, economic public law and human rights.
