Job description

TU Delft is opening a 2.5 year post-doc position on numerical simulation of novel cement systems during carbon capture and storage (CCS). In this project, a reaction-transport model will be developed to simulate the reaction process and microstructure development of cement systems during CCS, based on kinetics and thermodynamics of chemical reactions. This model will be coupled to a mechanical model, and used to assess the net effect of self-enhancing (Ca2+-leaching) and self-healing mechanisms of cracks exposed to a flow of CO2. Within TU Delft, there will be a close collaboration between this postdoctoral researcher and a postdoctoral researcher working on the effect of thermal cycling on the cement-steel interface of wellbore cement, who will be stationed at the CEG-Geosciences.

This postdoctoral project is part of the newly formed consortium CEMENTEGRITY, with Norwegian, British and Dutch industry and academic partners. In the Netherlands, we will be part of the CO2 capture and storage network CATO (www.co2-cato.org/).

Requirements

  • PhD in Civil Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering;
  • Experienced in numerical simulation of cement-based materials, having materials research backgroup on alkali activated materials will be a plus;
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken) and good communication skills;
  • Team worker, but independent thinking researcher;
  • Result oriented, creative thinking and systematic working.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 30 months.
