Job description

Do you want to improve the safety of plant-based products? Do you get excited about quantitative microbiology? At the laboratory of Food Microbiology of Wageningen University you can work on these topics. We are looking for an ambitious Postdoctoral researcher with a great interest in designing models to predict growth of pathogens in foods. Will you be our new colleague?
This postdoc project focusses on the design of mathematical models to predict the growth of pathogens in plant-based foods to safely design novel protein-rich foods. The project funded by Top Sector Agri&Food involves multiple industrial partners (food manufacturers and ingredient suppliers) and the research institute Wageningen Food & Biobased Research.

As postdoctoral researcher, your will:
  • use experimental and literature data to develop predictive models for growth of pathogens in different plant-based products. The experimental data collection is performed in close collaboration by the project partner Wageningen Food & Biobased Research;
  • evaluate strategies to control the microbiological risks based on the new models;
  • publish results and findings in peer reviewed journals;
  • supervise food microbiology practicals and/or online courses on food microbiology (10-15% of your time).
The mission of our laboratory of Food Microbiology (www.wur.nl/fhm) is to generate and disseminate knowledge of food associated microbes to assure quality and safety of food (see the video below). In order to control food safety and quality from primary production to consumption, solid knowledge of food microbiology is necessary and both positive (fermentation) and negative aspects (spoilage, disease) of micro-organisms are studied. Quality and safety of food is relevant for public health, sustainability and also for enjoying life. This is what we teach and research.
This we do in a dynamic, international group of people with state of the art infrastructure and many national and international collaborations.
