The Institute of Philosophy is seeking further to strengthen its research and teaching in theoretical philosophy, which includes logic, metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language, science, and mind. One of our priorities for this vacancy is to strengthen our Dutch-language teaching capacity. The Leiden theoretical philosophy group is a research-intensive, internationally oriented, and collegial unit with good links to other university departments. We offer a starting position that could range from 0.8-1.0 FTE, with an initial, fixed-term contract of eighteen months, and the possibility of a permanent contract to follow.

Key responsibilities

The successful candidate will take on the following responsibilities commensurate with career stage:

• Original research in theoretical philosophy, leading to high-quality publications;
• Teaching of philosophy courses in logic and other subjects in Dutch and in English in our BA and MA programmes in Philosophy and in other Leiden University degree programmes as required, as well as supervision of BA and MA theses;
• Supervision of PhD research;
• Acquisition of research funding from outside sources;
• Representation of the field to external audiences and media;
• Active participation in the running of the institution.

Selection criteria

• PhD degree in philosophy;
• Specialization in any area of theoretical philosophy, taken to include logic, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of science (including special sciences), philosophy of mind, and history of analytic philosophy;
• Research and publication record commensurate with career stage;
• Broad teaching competencies and teaching experience in philosophy and commitment to high-quality teaching practice. An ability to teach logic and other courses in Dutch from the date of appointment will be considered essential;
• Excellent command of English;
• The appointee is required, depending on experience and formal qualifications, to obtain a nationally recognised University Teaching Qualification (BKO). The appointee must demonstrate sufficient progress toward the attainment of the BKO by the time of the probationary review;
• Openness to other philosophical traditions and to interdisciplinary cooperation;
• Team player, but also able to carry out independent research and teaching;
• Flexible, enterprising, and enthusiastic.

Terms and conditions
We offer an initial fixed-term (18 month) appointment that could range from 0.8-1.0 FTE, that is, to begin on 1 January, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter, with the possibility of a permanent contract conditional on performance and funding, to be determined after the first year of service.
Salary range, depending on training and experience, from €[[salarisMin]].- to €[[salarisMax]].- gross per month (pay scale [[ufoSchaal]]), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). You may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until you fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities. Should the initial position begin at an appointment level of less than 1.0 FTE, we may make the position into a full-time one after promotion to permanent should finances and circumstances permit this.
