The Faculty of TPM invites candidates to study the effects of digitalization via a Tenure Track position as assistant/associate professor programmable infrastructures

Job description

As more advanced forms of computing become feasible, new opportunities and possibilities loom in a variety of infrastructure domains. For example, in the form of new mobility services in the context of transportation, or smart energy in energy systems. However, the digital transformation projects foreseen for existing infrastructure industries contain a challenge.

Digitalization opens up dazzling new possibilities, but also can have fundamental consequences for what services are being developed and how these are going to be provided to society. These developments in turn can influence how society evolves.

However, in-depth knowledge and reflection on the role of particularly computing and its influence on societal development via digitalization of infrastructures is largely absent. Digitalization efforts take place in an "ecosystem" which revamped how software is produced defining digital transformation via cloud services, mobile devices and IoT offerings (current day computational infrastructures). How do such trends in computing influence the provision and development of services in infrastructure domains such as for example mobility? How does the vision of programmable infrastructures play out in the provision and development of infrastructure services in energy or mobility? How far and in what way are these shaped by computational infrastructures? How do digititalization projects affect the realization of societal or public values? How do responsibilities and accountability with regard to infrastructure service provision change as a result of increased digitalization? To what extent do technology companies influence the current developments in fields such as energy, mobility?

You will be part of the Organisation & Governance section in the Department of Multi-Actor Systems at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. The section focuses on the governance of infrastructure systems such as water, energy, transport, urban or health systems from the perspective of social sciences and public administration in particular, and contributes to analysing institutional implications and improving decision-making processes.

You will contribute to the group's research which investigates the role of computational infrastructures (cloud + mobile devices) concentrated in the hands of a few technology companies and its implications for digitalization of infrastructures and society more generally. Specifically, you will contribute to the development of the field of “programmable infrastructures” which we use to refer to the political, economic and technological vision that advocates for the introduction of computational infrastructures onto our coventional material infrastructures (e.g. transport, energy, ports, etc.).

The TT position programmable infrastructures increases our understanding about the role of computational infrastructures in transforming conventional material infrastructures using digitalization. It focuses particularly on the role and influence of service providers on ongoing efforts in digitalization and the development of new digital services in infrastructure sectors. The TT position would conduct research into how the vision of programmable infrastructures influences the shaping of these infrastructure industries and assesses its societal implications in terms of the realization of public values.
