Job description

Can you imagine a future with autonomous crop production systems that provide nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables locally and on-demand? Are you enthusiastic about using Customer Behaviour Data, Consumer Health Data and apply Data Science methods to realize a Next Generation Food Ecosystem? Then this is the opportunity you are looking for!

Your work will focus on design of a Data Platform that is the center of a food ecosystem containing local Greenhouses and Vertical Farms. Your work will focus on controlled environment agriculture (greenhouses and vertical farms), where you will develop novel methodologies to predict fruit and vegetable quality based on their growth conditions.

Your starting package includes a PhD position, who will work on this topic under your supervision.

The position is part of a multi-disciplinary programme entitled 'High-tech & data-driven agri-food system of the future'. Together with four other tenure trackers of the four Dutch technology universities (4TU), industry partners and government stakeholders you will contribute to novel high-tech local food systems which can be scaled to many urban environments in the world.

You contribute to research, teaching, and knowledge valorization. You will:
  • carry out high-tech business research, with a genuine interest in operating at crossroads of Data Science, Information Architecture and Business areas with a specific focus on realizing new business ecosystems;
  • improve your home-based specific expertise and develop an interdisciplinary research line;
  • build our research and teaching ecosystem (e.g., by acquiring external research funding);
  • (co-)teach and coordinate courses in our Bachelor and Master programs of Business & IT, Industrial Engineering and International Business Administration;
  • guide students from these programs in their graduation assignment;
  • develop expertise in novel data driven research methods and work jointly with BMS lab (a lab that develops expertise in using industrial and behavioural research datasets for research);
  • You evaluate your solutions in the light of societally relevant values, which could be security, safety, efficiency, quality of care, privacy, innovation potential or others;
  • contribute towards the supervision of PhD students.

Requirements

  • show vision and ambitious drive (seeing opportunities and possibilities, showing ambition);
  • have knowledge of and experience in digital systems for healthcare (e.g. data infrastructures, service platforms, analytics) with application to business domains such as socio-technical research, addressing issues of governance (e.g. access and decision rights) and/or technology (e.g. machine learning, privacy-preserving technologies, blockchain);
  • hold a PhD degree in computer science, information systems, AI, information sciences, medical informatics, systems engineering or a related field and have experience in research, which is apparent from publications in reputable academic journals, presentations in international scientific conferences, and other academic activities;
  • conduct (fundamental and applied) research within a multidisciplinary environment;
  • are active in networks for acquiring research funding, and have ambition and experience in working closely with companies and government agencies;
  • have teaching experience (both lecturing and tutoring) at an internationally accredited university;
  • possess good communication skills and an excellent command of English;
  • possess a (equivalent of) University Teaching Qualification certificate, or be willing to obtain this, and have a real passion for, and the ambition to become a creative and effective teacher.

Conditions of employment

We offer a permanent position (1.0 FTE) after a positive evaluation after 1 year. The starting salary, depending on your experience, ranges between € 3.974 to € 6.181 gross per month (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities), based on the job profile Assistant Professor. In addition, the University of Twente offers additional attractive employment conditions (8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, solid pension scheme, sabbatical leave, professional and personal development programs, etc.).

We are looking for an excellent enthusiastic scholar to join the High-tech Business and Entrepreneurship (HBE) department at the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences. HBE holds a leading position at the interfaces of business, technology and the social sciences. In our ground-breaking research and novel education programmes, we strive for making an impact in business and healthcare by conducting cross-disciplinary research. We combine various themes such as smart-industry, supply chain management, transportation and logistics management, innovation management, healthcare operations, technology-based entrepreneurship, purchasing and supply management, cyber security, financial engineering, HRM, change management, and leadership.

This position will be part of the Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems (IEBIS) section within the High-tech Business and Entrepreneurship (HBE). The mission of IEBIS is to conduct high-quality interdisciplinary research and education in the area of Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems. We focus on projects within the logistics, healthcare and services sectors that have substantial impact on innovating practice while significantly contributing to the international scientific knowledge base.
