Job description

The group of Integrated Devices and Systems (IDS) at the University of Twente (UT) is part of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) and the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. MESA+ is the largest research institute of the UT. The institute trains graduate students and PhD-students and conducts research in the fields of nanotechnology, microsystems, materials science and microelectronics. Unique of MESA+ is its multidisciplinary composition.

The IDS group has a vacancy for a postdoc to work on photodiode detectors for photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

The aim of the project is to research and develop germanium photodiodes that are sensitive in a broad spectral range encompassing visual to short-wavelength light up to 1600 nm. The basic process will be a further development of our broadband Ge-on-Si "PureGaB" diodes that have been demonstrated with exceptional broadband responsivity and low dark currents. Concomitantly, the diodes should be modified to allow integration in an existing waveguide photonic circuit platform, and performance suitable for quantum computing circuits is aspired. The postdoc will focus on the device design, characterization and optimization, and partly supervise a PhD student focusing on the device fabrication. They will work closely with 2 PhD's already studying the application of pure boron layers in other semiconductor devices.

This topic is part of a large European project with ten industrial and academic partners with a strong international reputation in PIC research. We aim to develop a unique PIC platform with functions enabled by hybrid integration of waveguides, detectors and lasers. The students have full access to state-of-the-art characterization equipment as well as the MESA+ Nanolab for experimentation.

Type of work: 50% optoelectronic device design and characterization, 30% practical experimentation, 20% material analysis.
