An exciting opportunity for molecular and cell biologists interested in applying their knowledge to biomaterials.

Job description

The Biomaterials and Tissue Biomechanics section has a strong research focus on biofabrication and the temporal bidirectional interactions between cells and multi-cues engineered microenvironments.

With this tenure track position, the section will expand its multidisciplinary expertise in these areas by including for the first time a cell biologist who will foster the current biological research and advance the fundamental understanding of complex engineered living constructs. In the long term, this position will contribute to the ambitions of the section and BMechE department as a center of excellence at the intersection of biofabrication, biomaterials and biology. (see https://tudelft.nl/en/3me/about/departments/biomechanical-engineering)

Research:
Your research will involve cells and tissues growing on advanced biomaterials (2D and 3D multifunctional structures) that are designed and fabricated e.g., by (bio)printing. Applications include tissue repair, tissue regeneration, disease models for both soft and hard tissues.

  • you will develop methodologies at tissue, cell and molecular scales (e.g., correlative approaches, cell tracking, proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics) and advanced in vitro/ex vivo models (e.g., co-culture models including bacterial cells, microfuidics) for qualitative and quantitative (in situ) monitoring of the biological functions of the engineered constructs and for understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms
  • you will expand and strenthen collaboration within the section, department, faculty and Medical Delta on engineered living tissues, organoids, iPSCs, cell sensing and responses under various external stimuli, etc.
  • you will create your own research line and build-up your own research group in collaboration with relevant scientifc and clinical staff members/partners.
  • you are expected to acquire grants and expand our current research capacity.

Education:

  • you are expected to provide high-quality education in the field of cell and molecular biology as well as in adjacent areas
  • your specific educational activities will be established in agreement with and based on your profile
  • you show a clear commitment to the quality of courses provided in the department on relevant topics (e.g., Cell and Tissue Biomechanics, Regenerative Medicine)
  • you supervise MSc and PhD students
  • you are expected to use and introduce new innovative teaching methods to cope/adapt to new learning environments.
