Job description

The section of Biomaterials and Tissue Biomechanics of the BioMechanical Engineering department has a strong focus on development of advanced tissue constructs by using 3D/4D (bio)printing techniques. Therefore, the section has already a state-of-the-art ML1 lab. This research is currently expanding to incorporate bioprinted multicellular constructs, microfluidic systems and the use of both mammalian and bacterial cells. To support the expansion of these activities, we are looking for a biofabrication technician who could assisst with design and bioprinting of scaffolds and living constructs, cell/tissue characterization, bioinks formulation, data analyses and reporting.

As a biofabrication technician you will:

  • develop protocols & in vitro research models/set-ups
  • assisst with biofabrication and microfuidics experiments
  • develop novel bioinks
  • support researchers with their biological experiments
  • acquire & process data
  • write reports on experimental findings
  • provide hands-on sessions and training for students and junior researchers
  • contribute to setting-up an ML2 lab
  • operate & manage equipment used in ML1 and ML2 labs.

Requirements

You should have the following qualifications:

  • at least BSc degree in polymer chemistry, biology or biomedical engineering or in a related area
  • a strong background in polymer engineering, biology, and/or histology
  • excellent knowledge on biolab procedures, regulations, and equipment
  • excellent knowledge about/prior experience with bioprinting, hydrogels, bioinks formulation and microfluidics are desirable
  • excellent experimental & analytical skills
  • creativity & pro-active attitude
  • strong computer and design skills
  • excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).

  • are a team-player and enthusiastic about working in a multidisciplinary team
  • have enthusiasm and motivation to work and contribute to scientific articles.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

  • A salary according to the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (salary indication: € 2.818 - € 4.257 per month gross, scale 8 or 9, depending on the background and experience of the candidate), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
