General description of activities
The work of the Professor includes teaching (degree and executive education), conducting research, fulfilling administrative tasks (committees) and representative tasks. Furthermore, the Professor is expected to actively contribute to cooperation with practitioners from his/her position.
Aim and responsibilities of the chair
Modern Government is a strategic theme for Nyenrode Business University. The research, education, leading the debate and solutions activities are together operated by the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute (NCGI). The NCGI is a hybrid multi-disciplinary community of approximately 20-25 faculty, staff, and (academic) colleagues from outside Nyenrode. The community meets monthly to discuss current research and developments. The professor filling this position will be in the chair lead to further the development of the NCGI agenda.
The NCGI has a very good reputation as demonstrated by several research projects commissioned by the Dutch Corporate Governance Code Monitoring Committee to the NCGI, including the important compliance research for six years in a row starting in 2010. Furthermore, the NCGI has been contracted to do research for companies in the Netherlands and our aim is to expand the contract research portfolio.
1. Research
The academic output of our research activities provides the basis for our Executive Education Programs and when needed our Degree Programs. The professor will be responsible for publications in scientific journals and/or books and other publications; for establishing, maintaining, and expanding cooperation with national and international research institutes, universities and (international) businesses wherever possible and viable; for fostering and extending the network and alliances; and for embedding the input of research activities into the educational activities. The professor will also be responsible for drafting a long-term research agenda for the NCGI with members of the NCGI.
Considering the profile of Nyenrode and its executive education program, we are looking for a profile that is both research and impact oriented. The prospective research agenda will need to align with major societal transformations such as climate change, planetary boundaries, inequality, energy transition, big data, and artificial intelligence, and degrowth perspectives and their expected impact in the domain of corporate governance such as long-termism and sustainability; inclusion and embedding of stakeholder interests; the 17 UN SDGs; future regulatory developments; and the governance of eco-systems. The candidate should have a profile that reflects the position of corporate governance in the Netherlands from a comparative perspective.
Academic rigor is of the highest importance and the candidate needs to have an excellent track record of peer reviewed papers in top international academic journals in the domain of corporate governance. He/she also needs to have an international network that will allow us to work with international consortia and to develop both traditional academic and impact-oriented research to an international standard. This research will be embedded in (executive and degree) education and it is precisely here that the university can also provide an important impetus to public debate.
2. Education
Corporate Governance is a crucial subject taught in the Executive Education offerings (New Board Program, ‘Commissarissencyclus’, Electives, and the remaining programs in our Board & Governance portfolio). Over time, there will be a need to teach Degree programs as well, but the initial focus will be on our Board & Governance programs. The aim is to maintain the position of the Executive Education offerings and if possible, to strengthen that position.
Teaching skills need to be highly developed, business groups oriented, especially in the executive education space, since this will be the primary focus groups of our programs. The applicant should have had exposure to boardroom members and dynamics.
3. Leading the Debate
Together with members of the NCGI and staff the Professor will disseminate the results of our research in a bimonthly newsletter, practitioner publications, newspapers, and magazines.
To fulfil a leading role in the debate on corporate governance, the candidate is expected to have experience publishing in relevant international practitioner-oriented outlets; to have a track record of successful dissemination of research and impact findings in academic as well as practitioner-oriented outlets; to have established excellent contacts with the Dutch and international business and regulator communities and, ideally, to be embedded in alumni networks.
4. Solutions
The candidate will be asked to attract revenues through the successful acquisition of contract research monies. Predominantly this will entail inhouse and dedicated versions of our top programs. The candidate is, therefore, expected to have experience with inhouse and customized program offerings for major companies and organizations.
