i4Driving is a large new EU project in which we aim to develop a methodology to benchmark level 3 and higher vehicle automation ("autopilot") algorithms. Using this methodology (from data collection, modelling, virtual testing, to fieldtesting) the OEM industry and the road regulators should be able to make plausible predictions about whether such auto-pilot algorithms behave like a "skilled and attentive human driver" (and preferably much safer!) when interacting with other vehicles.

A central component in this framework is a (more) realistic simulation model of tactical human driving behaviour (than is available today), that is, a model that describes and predicts the planning and execution of trajectories of say a few hundred meters.

Your task is to develop the conceptual, mathematical and numerical ideas underlying that simulation model.

Of course, you don't have to start from scratch and you do not work alone on this problem. This is a huge interdisciplinary project with top-institutes across the EU and beyond (Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Spain, US, China, Australia and more).

At TU Delft the team consist of dr Calvert, dr Martinez, prof van Lint, a new postdoc and one or two dedicated programmers. This work lies on the interface of research and development, so we follow the evidence, and not blindly the project objectives. Having said that, we will produce a lab-validated methodology, however uncertain many of the ideas may be. What is certain, is that this is a challenging project, which will lead to a highly relevant PhD thesis.

• A Master's degree Msc in Transportation, Physics, Math, Computer science or any relevant field.
• You have a passion for science and doing research and have a CV that proves it.
• You love coding (Python, JAVA?) and/or are prepared to learn and become even better at it.
• You are a natural collaborator and have a CV that shows it.
• You have affinity with behaviourial research.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year.
