Would you like to play a central role in research into the effect of human activities on the ecosystem? Do you want to do research that really matters and makes a difference in real life? Then we have an interesting vacancy for you at Wageningen Marine Research as a bio-statistician.

The successful candidate:
  • Can successfully deploy his or her expertise in research projects focusing on interpreting statistical results in light of biological/ecological context, while being supported by experts that hold extensive knowledge on the species under study.
  • Knows how to interpret statistical results in light of biological/ecological processes.
  • Holds a strong interest in statistics, including tracking the development in this field.
  • Is an appreciated team-member, who helps to improve our research and the statistical knowledge of colleagues.
  • Actively seeks out collaboration with other researchers within the institute.
  • Actively contributes to apply innovative statistical techniques.
  • Publishes regularly as co-author and sometimes as first author in peer reviewed papers.
  • Contributes to the acquisition of new research projects within the described area of expertise.

Requirements

  • A completed and relevant academic degree, MSc (or equivalent) in statistics and/or biology/ecology'. A PhD in the field relevant to this position is an advantage.
  • Existing relevant experience as a biological statistician.
  • Your knowledge of commonly used statistical techniques in ecology is excellent and you make an effort to follow developments in the field of statistics to maintain a state-of-the-art know-how.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of statistical analysis of large datasets with ecologicalinformati on and the practical application of statistical techniques to real world problems.
  • You constantly work to further develop your understanding of these techniques.
  • Experienced in coding in R.
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting academic staff in undertaking statistical analyses is an advantage.
  • You are customer-oriented, enterprising, result-oriented, flexible and stress resistant.
  • You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain novel and standard statistical methods to colleagues.
  • You can describe research in clear and high-quality reports and you can translate results into concrete advice to users and other stakeholders.
  • You have a good knowledge of the English language and preferably also the Dutch language, both orally and in writing (level C1).

Conditions of employment

Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms of employment. A few highlights from our Collective Labour Agreement include:
  • working hours that can be determined in consultation, so that an optimal balance between
  • work and private life is possible; partial working from home is possible;

These excellent fringe benefits also come with an appropriate salary. Depending on yourexperience, we offer a salary in line with the market up to a maximum of € 4.809,- for a full working week of 36 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 10/Hay profile WR researcher 4). You will be employed by a payroll organization and get a contract for one year. If you are performing well and sufficient work is available withing your work field and the institute as a whole, extension of your contract is possible.

The location is IJmuiden.

Wageningen Marine Research (WMR) is a leading, independent research institute that focuses on strategic and applied marine ecological research. The institute was established in 2006. Products and services are executed on a project basis (more than 400 research projects) and show a wide diversty: field research, experiments on a realistic scale, on lab scale, data management and modelling. The institute has modern research facilities and is ISO 9001 certified.

The research in our organization focuses on sustainable use of the sea and other large bodies of water and on understanding the consequences of human activities on the (marine) ecosystem. To this end, field data is collected and used to develop or improve risk assessment methods, mathematical and statistical models. We use various statistical methods and techniques in our data analyzes. These are used for integrated state assessments, ecosystem-based management and policy advice based on advanced science.
