Job description

In the Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics group at Utrecht University we have an opening for a (Senior) Technician Molecular Cell Biology. Our research division is greatly invested in the development and application of new, highly sensitive and robust quantitative proteomics workflows to solve diverse biological and clinical questions. To join our team we are looking for a skilled technician with experience in cloning, genome editing, and protein expression to help build biological tools to investigate protein structure and function. The group you will join is a diverse and inter­national group with world-renowned expertise in the analysis of the structure and function of protein machineries and we have an excellent network of academic and industry partners.

As our new molecular cell biology expert you will be an integral part of our team and assist in the general research projects, with an emphasis on mammalian cell culture, cloning, genome editing, protein expression, and protein purification. Next to your hands-on work and research in the laboratory, you will be responsible for:

  • maintenance of the stock of consumables and materials;
  • managing the use of shared facilities;
  • testing and improving biological assays in cell culture including live cell imaging, viability assays, and proximity labelling;
  • training new staff.

Requirements

We are looking for someone who recognizes one or multiple of the following qualifications: a hands-on, flexible, self-motivated, organized, open minded and creative team player, keen to work in a multi-disciplinary and international environment. Furthermore, we would also like you to have:

  • a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field;
  • extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques including cloning, lentiviral transduction, CRISPR-CAS genome editing, protein expression, and protein purification;
  • strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to communicate effectively and work well with your colleagues;
  • the ability to execute protocols correctly and comply with biosafety regulatory guidelines;
  • strong verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and/or English;
  • direct experience in managing GMO safety compliance is highly valued. 

Conditions of employment

  • A position for 1 year, extended to a permanent position following a positive evaluation.
  • A full-time gross salary ranging from €2,960 to € 4,670 in scale 9 or 10, depending on education and level of expertise.
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • A pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.

This position is embedded in the Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics group. The research division focusses on development in robust quantitative proteomics workflows, LC methods, improved analysis of various post-translational modifications and structural biology, crosslinking MS and bio­informatics tools. Such innovations are then applied to diverse biological and clinical questions and commercialized world-wide for other scientific groups to use. We are a diverse and inter­national group with world-renowned expertise in the analysis of the structure and function of protein machineries and we have an excellent network of academic and industry partners.
