Job description

Erasmus Magazine (EM) is looking for an up-and-coming journalist to fill the position of Junior Editor for a period of one year for 0.8 FTE (four days a week). This position is filled annually on a rotating basis. The job is a work experience position that includes coaching in the process of creating journalistic products, an opportunity for training in the field of journalistic professionalisation and personal development. As Junior Editor, you will work as part of the editorial team, make journalistic productions and look at your colleagues’ ideas and stories with a fresh perspective. Under its recent multi-year strategy, EM pursues a diverse and inclusive editorial team, so we hope to welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds.

Your main responsibilities are:

  • searching for and finding news at the university;
  • making news productions in text and video, and social media posts;
  • thinking of and creating innovative and appealing online productions for the site and social media;
  • contributing ideas and providing input for a new online platform of EM to be developed next year;
  • providing input for stories, angles and perspectives from your own knowledge and experience.

Requirements

 

  • You have professional and intellectual ability on university level or university of applied sciences level.
  • You have some journalistic experience within your education, from an internship or on your own initiative.
  • You have an international background in a broad sense of the word.
  • You have a professional command of English (C1); knowledge of Dutch is an advantage.
  • You are familiar with the possibilities and requirements of multimedia journalism.

 

Conditions of employment

Internationally oriented and varied work within an enthusiastic team, with attractive fringe benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).

The employment contract is entered into for a period of one year. Remuneration is based on your specific knowledge and experience and will be calculated on the basis of a full-time salary ranging between € 2,818,- and € 3,764,-  gross per month (scale 8).

EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits and a very generous leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision, and we offer partially paid parental leave. Employees can also use EUR facilities, such as the Erasmus Sports Centre and the University Library.

Erasmus Magazine (EM) is Erasmus University Rotterdam’s independent journalistic platform.

In the university community, EM is an incisive and critical source of breaking news and opinion.

EM is a bilingual online platform (NL-ENG) that brings readers background stories and news focused on Erasmus University’s students and staff. The editorial statute guarantees the independence of the editorial team in carrying out its duties.

EM’s editorial team is an independent department within the university’s General Management Directorate, positioned directly under the Executive Board in the organisation. Once this vacancy has been filled, the editorial team will consist of seven permanent members of staff, complemented by professional freelancers and student employees. The team members support each other, and the team is flexible, hard-working and socially engaged.
