Job description

As the Senior Application Specialist – Automation, you will be responsible for running, maintaining, and troubleshooting the operation of ReGEN Biomedical’s automated pilot line for producing micro- and macrotissues. This includes programming the automated equipment to carry out the desired tasks, scheduling the experiments to maximize the utilization of the automated equipment, logging all activity, and reporting on the progress and technical challenges. In this role, your tasks will include: 

  • programming and running routine experiments on the automated line, consisting of automated equipment such as liquid handler, plate hotel incubator, microscope, and robotic arm 
  • ensuring timely equipment maintenance and tracking software updates 
  • inventory management and purchasing of cells, reagents, and consumables 
  • ensuring proper documentation of all experiments 
  • maintaining strong communication with other technical team members 
  • keeping management up to date with experimental progress and technical challenges or opportunities

Requirements

We are looking for an independent and collaborative engineer with the following skills and experiences. However, we encourage applications from interested candidates even if they do not fulfil every requirement.

  • A generalist who has worked in a variety of projects, used a variety of scientific equipment, and stays up to date with the latest scientific advances would be a great fit for this position 
  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Automation, or a related field is preferred, but not a necessity for a candidate with suitable experience and aptitude 
  • Experience with basic cell culture and some form of complex, automated equipment (e.g. liquid handlers, additive manufacturing, automated microscopes) are essential 
  • Experience with writing software code is a strong plus 
  • Experience with developing 3D CAD drawings is a strong plus 
  • Understanding of IP protection and regulatory processes is beneficial
  • Structured approach, attention to detail 
  • Organizational skills, hands-on mentality 
  • Result-oriented, strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good reporting skills – experience with electronic lab notebooks preferred
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary team members – experience of working in collaborative, multidisciplinary projects preferred
  • Good communication skills – experience of sharing results, issues, and progress preferred. Working language is English. Knowledge of Dutch is useful but not necessary
  • Drive and initiative for research and curiosity to stay updated with the latest advances in the field
  • Available for 38 hours (1 FTE) per week on site in Maastricht

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year, with a view to permanent employment.

ReGEN Biomedical is company with a small and talented team that is building a production location for human tissue in Maastricht. It focuses on growing large quantities of robust and reproducible small tissue pieces (micro-tissues) for toxicity & pharma screening.

Functional micro-tissues represent the next step in mimicking patient organs and represent the future of personalized medicine. We are building expertise on how to assemble the micro-tissues into functional pieces of human organs, the socalled macro-tissues. The micro-tissues also serve as building blocks for RM therapies and will be assembled into functional macro-tissues.
