Job description

The scientific community and the Dutch Research Council (NWO) are jointly establishing thematic Digital Competence Centres. Researchers and institutions, across the Netherlands, will work together in these network organisations to increase digital competencies.

There are three thematic Digital Competence Centres (TDCCs), corresponding to the three domains of science: Natural and Engineering Sciences (TDCC NES), Life Sciences and Health (LSH) and Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). All TDCCs are network organisations and bring together researchers, local institutional digital competence centres, infrastructure providers, knowledge and expertise networks, as well as other strategic initiatives active within domains. TDDC NES will address the data, software, meta-data, and computing challenges to enable researchers across the natural and engineering sciences make the most of resources in our digital age, with collaboration crossing both institutional and national borders.

Two coordinators are being appointed to lead the TDCC NES activities: the Network Manager and the Community Coordinator, who will jointly form the coordination team. As the Community Coordinator for the TDCC NES your role will be to establish and grow the TDCC NES community.

Your main tasks will be:

  • Connecting people from different disciplines, infrastructure, resources and tools
  • Mapping the infrastructure, existing resources and tools important for the domain
  • Engaging directly with research groups and domain specialists and identifying existing and emerging solutions that can enhance the digital competence of the research domain
  • Supporting research groups and institutions in connecting with peers where collaborations could be established.
  • Supporting research groups and institutional DCCs in formulating joint challenges that can be turned into concrete projects.
  • Organising community building activities, such as workshops, training, and other means of information sharing (online and in person).

You will be reporting directly to the Board of the TDCC NES.
Your formal appointment will be with TU Delft, the legal entity of 4TU.ResearchData, which hosts the TDCC NES. TU Delft is the largest technical university in the Netherlands. 4TU.ResearchData is a repository for data and software from science, engineering and design domains. TU Delft, 4TU.ResearchData, as well as other organisations within the natural and engineering sciences in the Netherlands will jointly form the TDCC NES Consortium. Other partners in the consortium will include NIKHEF, the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics; Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands; CWI, the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science; KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, and many others.

Requirements

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who:

  • Have a good understanding of the importance of digital competencies within contemporary research
  • Demonstrated ability to bring people together around a shared goal and experience
  • Have experience running collaborative endeavours, workshops and facilitating knowledge exchange
  • Have strong communication and people skills and are able to navigate the complex landscape of the Natural and Engineering Sciences (NES) domain
  • Have excellent command of English (and for non-Dutch speakers, a willingness to learn Dutch)
  • Have the ability and willingness to work effectively in a dynamic and rapidly evolving context.
  • Academic background and community management experience (desirable)

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 48 months.

  • Duration of contract is 48 months.
  • A job of 36-40 hours per week.
  • A salary based on scale 12 of the CAO for Dutch Universities with a minimum of € 4.814,- and a maximum of € 6.181,- gross per month based on a fulltime contract (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
