Are you fascinated by the interactions between algebraic geometry and number theory? Contribute to explore the arithmetic of Fano varieties!

Job description

The Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University is offering a 3-year postdoc position in arithmetic geometry funded by the VIDI grant “Fano varieties: rational points and beyond” of Marta Pieropan. The grant aims to develop a systematic approach to measure the distribution of special subsets of rational points, also called Campana points, on log Fano varieties over number fields or over global function fields, and to uncover their relation to logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the project, as well as to develop your own research line. The main projects our group works on concern the arithmetic of rational points and Campana points on Fano type varieties using tools from analytic number theory, birational geometry and logarithmic geometry. The neighbouring research groups in the Mathematical Institute work on moduli spaces of sheaves, enumerative geometry, moduli spaces of curves and of abelian varieties, modular forms, analytic and algorithmic number theory, zeta functions and Galois representations attached to algebraic varieties. You will have no mandatory teaching duties. However, if you wish to do so, you will get the opportunity to acquire teaching experience.

You will be appointed to Utrecht University for this position, however as the research group is involved in a collaboration between multiple universities, including Leiden University and Groningen University, you will get the chance to visit the other universities for research purposes as well.

You will need a completed PhD in mathematics before the starting date of the position. Furthermore, you should be interested in one or more of the following topics: rational points, (log) Fano varieties, the circle method, counting techniques over global function fields, logarithmic geometry, moduli spaces of stable (log) maps. A working proficiency in English will be necessary, knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.

Employer

A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major societal themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Sustainability.

At the Faculty of Science, there are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes that work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects. Find out more about us.

Our Institute has a very active algebraic geometry and number theory community, including Gunther Cornelissen, Carel Faber, Valentijn Karemaker, Martijn Kool, Marta Pieropan and Lola Thompson. You will join the research group of Marta Pieropan, who is an assistant professor at Utrecht University and also a member of the Dutch research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions” connecting Utrecht University, Leiden University, and the University of Groningen. You will have ample opportunity to participate in seminars and workshops here in Utrecht, as well as in the consortium activities. Funding is available to support travel to conferences and workshops abroad.
