Employer

The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital is a comprehensive cancer center, in which cancer patients are treated and scientific research is performed within the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) to better understand cancer and continuously improve innovative methods of personalized treatment. Research at the NKI ranks amongst the best in the world and both core facilities make key contributions to the Institute and facilitate researchers in producing high impact publications.

The Experimental Animal Pathology Services facility has an excellently equipped histology laboratory where researchers from the NKI, but also from outside the Institute, can have tissues from laboratory animals processed to stained sections for microscopic evaluation, and where, in addition to standard H&E and special histochemical stains, also a lot of immunohistochemistry (IHC) is requested by researchers for characterization of lesions within research questions and for animal health diagnostics.

The Core Facility Molecular Pathology & Biobanking (CFMPB) also has a fully equipped histo/immuno and molecular lab where they , coordinate, assist and facilitate all research involving patient samples (such as blood, FFPE tissue and FF biopsies, DNA, and RNA) to ensure that these are used properly and efficiently, especially in case of scarce and valuable samples. The facility also provides professional expertise and support regarding medical-ethical and legal issues.

Both facilities have been operating successfully for many years and are highly valued by researchers, and due to the longstanding close collaboration between both high impact (translational) research is facilitated. The culture at the NKI/AvL is open, informal and positive, and we are currently recruiting a new colleague to strengthen our shared histology team.
