Job description

This is a unique opportunity for a 3 year postdoctoral position working on a prestigious high impact project aimed at reducing emissions in transportation.

TULIPS is a European funded project focused on reducing the environmental impacts related to travel to, from and in the hub of Schiphol airport. One part of this project is focused on improving the traffic efficiency of travel to and from the airport in the wider region, in part through traffic management (traditional and C-ITS) to improve road traffic operations to reduce congestion, reduce waiting times and in turn reduce the emissions from vehicles. In this project you will play a supporting role to two PhD students and a coordinating role in regard to the execution of the project. Your role will involve research on developing an integrated approach that allows both emissions and traffic efficiency to be simulated and their impacts to be assessed. This will require optimisation approaches and the integration of different types of traffic management to achieve this.

As part of the project, the selected candidate will take on a coordinating role within the project and will be expected to work closely with the project consortium partners and with local and national road authorities to obtain the best possible outcome for the project.

Requirements

You should have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Transportation Science, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related field.
  • Excellent knowledge of traffic theory, traffic modelling & simulation, and intelligent transportation systems.
  • Proven ability and desire to coordinate and lead project tasks, including liaising with project partners.
  • You have good communication skills and are able to work in a team.
  • You are creative, ambitious, hardworking and persistent.
  • Knowledge of analytical methods for impact assessment is desired.
  • Knowledge of the transportation and traffic management systems in The Netherlands is an advantage (but not required).
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills are required.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 33 Months.
