The Aeroacoustics Group in the Flow Physics Technology in the Aerospace Faculty of Delft University of Technology is looking for a tenure-track assistant professor to be integrated into the team and support educational and research activities in the aerospace and wind-energy field.

You will support the department’s educational mission, specifically contributing to applied aeroacoustics, preferably with a numerical/computational or analytical profile. As assistant professor, you will perform research in the field of noise control, using a combination of high-fidelity flow simulations and experimental techniques. An important part of your role will involve acquiring national and international funding in the areas of sustainable aviation and wind energy with a focus on ultra-quiet, zero-emission vehicles and propulsion concepts. Among the many activities of the group, you will take part in the following activities:

  • Preparation of experimental and numerical setups for the study of the scaling of rotors operating across low to high Reynolds numbers under severe turbulent inflow and with interacting components.
  • Analysis of the noise generation mechanisms determined by the interaction between propulsive systems and supporting or lifting aerodynamic surfaces.
  • Aeroacoustic analysis and of new disruptive industrial design solutions, including: boundary layer ingestion, distributed propulsion, multi-rotor in tractor/pusher/on the wing configurations, in collaboration with the propulsion section.
  • Preparation of experimental and numerical benchmarks for wind turbines vortex generators, serrations, and other boundary layer control or noise reduction technologies.
  • Modelling of the pressure fluctuations across metamaterials for airfoils with high separation and strong pressure gradients.
  • Support and responsibility of existing course portfolio and extension of the online Professional Education courses.
  • Supervision and support of the Team of PhD candidates and Postdocs.

Requirements

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in aerospace or mechanical engineering, acoustics, physics, mathematics, or a related subject.
  • Assessed expertise in performing high fidelity aeroacoustic numerical simulations and/or experiments.
  • Solid capability to work with CFD/CAA software packages or with experimental measurement techniques for simulations and experiments of academic and industrial relevance.
  • Able to work in an academic environment with support to research and educational activities of the team.
  • Able to draft research proposals for public/industrial funding schemes in the fields of aerospace and wind-energy.

Excellent communication skills in verbal and written English and committed to reporting his work with publications, benchmarking activities and patents.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
