Job description

This postdoctoral research position is part of the Erasmus Initiative "Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity" (DoIP) connecting members of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) with Erasmus School of Law and Erasmus School of Philosophy to channel their expertise into ambitious multi-disciplinary research projects. The postdoc project is part of a large Sino-Dutch research programme on inclusive waste management funded by the Dutch and Chinese research foundations (NWO and NSFC) in which Erasmus University Rotterdam is a partner, along with Delft University of Technology, Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving, Peking University, Tongji University, and City University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen Research Institute (CityU-SRI). The postdoc will be based at RSM in Rotterdam and the successful candidate will work closely with other DoIP staff and fellow researchers at TU Delft where they will spend time in the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences with members of the Inclusive Wise Waste Cities team.

Your main tasks
The role has a specific focus on the dynamic analysis and modelling of area-based waste handling chains in real-life projects in the Netherlands and China. DoIP's specific focus is on scientific as well as societal impact, so academic output and relevance to real-world problem-solving are both highly valued. 80 percent of the role is to be devoted to research that contributes to the "Inclusive Circular Economy" research theme, and 20 percent is to be devoted to sharing knowledge and creating impact on sustainable business.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you'll be expected to:
  • develop the research theme "Inclusive Circular Economy" with the scientific director and various partners involved in the research programme
  • collaborate closely with the core faculty of the Erasmus Initiative, as well as researchers in RSM's department of Business and Society Management
  • conduct original interdisciplinary research at the intersection of circular economy, waste management, business models, life cycle analysis, and dynamic modelling; co-author scientific articles to be published in leading journals; and contribute to improving the performance of waste management systems in the Netherlands and China
  • disseminate the research at, and participate in international academic conferences about industrial ecology, business, policy analysis, and other closely connected fields
  • co-organise events and disseminate the research in the public domain
  • contribute to teaching courses in the field of business and society management, specifically related to issues of sustainability.

Requirements

The successful candidate has:
  • a PhD in business, industrial ecology, systems analysis, policy analysis or other discipline relevant to the topic
  • a developing publication record with proven excellence in the above fields
  • expertise in the circular economy, life cycle analysis, waste management, business models and system dynamics or other dynamic modelling techniques
  • willingness to engage with industrial ecology, business management, and systems modelling at a high level of detail
  • ability and willingness to play a leading role in an interdisciplinary research team and the dissemination of research in interdisciplinary and public contexts
  • ability and willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching
  • an entrepreneurial attitude, outstanding social skills, and the ability to work in cross-international teams.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 24 months.

The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam and TU Delft on the topic of Inclusive Circular Economy. They will participate in regular meetings with the Chinese partners of the research project and will be able to build an international network and visibility in the field. We also strongly encourage the successful candidate to organize and participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences.

The successful candidate will also be embedded in the Erasmus Initiative Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity, an interdisciplinary research centre bringing together scholars in law, business and philosophy and focusing on enabling as many people as possible to benefit from increasing prosperity, whilst minimising the negative consequences.

Fixed-term contract: 2 years.

We expect the successful candidate to start as soon as possible. We offer a full-time, two-year contract with Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) with attractive employment conditions according to the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for universities (CAO NU). Salary is dependent on the candidate's experience and is set at CAO NU scale 11 with a minimum of € 3,746 and a maximum of € 5,127 gross per month on a full-time basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8 percent holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3 percent, and offers excellent secondary benefits, including a generous amount of vacation days. In addition, EUR takes part in the ABP pension scheme, and we also offer partially paid parental leave. For international spouses, EUR has set up a dual career programme.
