We have an open PhD position in innovative and innovative separation processes. This particular position will be dedicated to the design of innovative separation processes, and be part of a national team, that incorporates chemists, material scientists and process engineers.

What are you going to do?

• you will apply new electro-sensitive materials in lab and bench scale processes, to evaluate the capacity and selectivity of separation;
• your work will include the creation of the individual elements of the system, and focus on the overall design of a system that works on larger scales.

You will use computer models to capture the process dynamics.



The research is embedded within the chair Food Process Engineering, and part of the ReCoVR project consisting of three other universities, plus a wide range of industrial partners.
Current processes for isolating ingredients for food, such as proteins and flavours, require significant amounts of energy and chemicals. In this project, electrically driven separations will be developed that will allow for much more sustainable and circular recovery of these components.
You will be supervised by prof. Karin Schroën.

You have

• a successfully completed MSc degree in chemical or food process engineering, or similar, and be motivated to work on technology for a sustainable future;
• a drive to work in a multidisciplinary team, and have good communication skills to work effectively within a diverse team;
• modelling skills are considered as a plus.

For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level. Sometimes it is necessary to submit an internationally recognized Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. More information can be found here.

The gross salary for the first year is € 2.541,- per month rising to € 3.247,- in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for the duration of the project if you perform well.
