Do you want to contribute to achieving climate-neutrality aviation by studying the market and operational value of future (hybrid-)electric regional aircraft?

Job description

This PhD project is part of a large European project that aims to develop the future (hybrid-) electric regional aircraft. The goal of this PhD project is to development an integrated market deployment analysis and aircraft design model that can help defining the high-level design options that will be fit to the regional market. An optimisation framework will be developed that should be able to:

  • simulate the future regional hybrid-electric airplane operations scenario in a multimodal mobility environment;
  • compute the optimal network and fleet composition for reference airline cases;
  • propose aircraft redesign options, following a surrogated aircraft design model that allows to change key design parameters (within acceptable boundaries);
  • and computing key performance indicators, like

            * fuel burn/ energy reduction for the network missions

            * flight performance and payload/range frequencies

            * market demand for future concepts.

Requirements

The project combines knowledge on aircraft design and operations modelling. The candidates should have a strong background, at least, in one of the domains and be willing to develop knowledge on the other domain. Being also part of a large European project, it is expected that the candidate will have experience in working on a team of researchers.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. For more details please check the Graduate Schools Admission Requirements.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts.
