Job description

Are you interested in facilitating research that serves the well-being and health of humans and animals? And would you like to contribute to the health and welfare of laboratory animals to the transition towards animal-free research methods? If so, Utrecht University’s Central Laboratory Animal Research Facility has a vacancy that might interest you and moreover will allow you to develop your potential as a veterinarian and consultant to the full.

You will be working with laboratory animal caretakers and biotechnicians at the Central Laboratory Animal Research Facility (CLARF), laboratory animal experts at the Animal Welfare Body (AWB) Utrecht and researchers in the fields of veterinary and human health (at Utrecht University, University Medical Center Utrecht and external clients).

Together with a fellow veterinarian, you will be responsible for the health (both preventive and curative) of the laboratory animals (which include rodents, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs and birds). You will also be developing and implementing policy in the fields of laboratory animal health, animal welfare and health monitoring, as consultant to the CLARF management team. Finally, you will be contributing to the transition towards animal-free research methods.

  • You will assist researchers in developing and conducting animal studies and assess project proposals and working protocols for veterinary aspects, such as the microbial status of the laboratory animals, anaesthesia, analgesia and medication to be used.
  • You will monitor the health and welfare status of the laboratory animals and take action in case the animals experience discomfort and/or health issues.
  • You will take part in the discussion on and contribute to the implementation of the 3Rs policy: replacement, reduction and refinement of laboratory animal use.
  • As a veterinarian, you will make an active contribution to activities in the fields of organisational and cultural change within the CLARF, such as the strategic plan, accommodation issues, developing staff expertise and improving the efficiency of working methods.
  • Together with your fellow veterinarian, you will contribute to the CLARF’s certification and quality procedures.
  • You will teach a part of the Laboratory Animal Science course at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
  • You participate in the consignment service.
