Would you like to be part of the energetic team of Aerodynamics at TU Delft? We are searching for new colleagues to grow our program in Aerodynamic Flow Control.

Job description

The section of Aerodynamics (Department of Flow Physics and Technology) at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering of TU Delft is looking for a new colleague who shares our vision and enthusiasm for research and teaching. We work in an open, diverse and engaging team, striving to develop frontier science for Sustainable Aviation and Energy. We offer a stimulating environment to grow as all-round academic, state-of-the-art facilities and tools, a culture of collaboration, and a population of engaging and ambitious students.

The position is for an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Aerodynamics, with interest in the field of Flow Control. This field is inherently multi-disciplinary. Our team has been actively engaged in many aspects of Flow Control, developing passive and active methods to mitigate aerodynamic drag, noise emissions and unsteady loads, with applications in Aerospace and Wind Energy Systems. Extensive laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, and outstanding numerical tools and computational facilities, including the DelftBlue supercomputer, are available for holistic research on Flow Control.

We are looking for candidates with background knowledge, experience and the will to further develop in the following areas:

Research

  • Critical aerodynamic phenomena: laminar-to-turbulent transition, flow stability, flow separation, turbulent skin friction, unsteady loads, bluff-body flows.
  • Flow control technologies: smart surfaces and functional materials, vortex generators, pulsing/synthetic jets, plasma-based actuators, sensors, real-time controllers, stability theory, control theory, system-identification techniques.
  • Domains of interest: civil aviation, wind energy systems, air mobility, ground vehicles.

Expertise with experimental and numerical tools for Aerodynamic and Flow Control research is valued.

Education

You will be expected to contribute to the education mission of the faculty of Aerospace Engineering, by teaching in the BSc and MSc programs and supervising PhD candidates at our faculty. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to innovate our educational portfolio by introducing new content and/or new teaching methods. Preparing, supervising and assessing BSc and MSc student projects is a core activity in our education.

Valorisation and impact

Participation in national and European research networks. You will have the opportunity to initiate new research directions by envisaging projects and procurement of funding. Dissemination of results to the wide public. Public outreach.

You have started an academic, research or scientific track and are able to contribute by expanding or strengthening research and education on Aerodynamic Flow Control. You have an open, engaging and inspiring attitude toward colleagues and students alike.

Furthermore;

  • You hold MSc and PhD degrees in a relevant field (e.g. Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics and alike).
  • Postdoctoral experience in academia and/or industry relevant to the topic is valued;
  • Experience in writing scientific articles and preparation of research proposals;
  • You like to work in a team, like to work in a cooperative and amicable environment and possess good organizational skills;
  • Excellent communicational skills;
  • Teaching experience is considered advantageous.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
