The Information Retrieval Lab is looking for an ambitious Research Software Engineer to work together with research scientists in the field of Search, Recommendation and ConversationalAI. This is an opportunity to work with a team at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and data science.

What are you going to do?

As a research software engineer you will provide Machine Learning and Data Engineering support to ongoing scientific research projects in the Information Retrieval Lab (IRLab) of the Informatics Institute (IvI).

Tasks and responsibilities:
  • Developing demos and code packages, supporting and advising on implementation details
  • Maintaining and improving slurm cluster, assisting with best-practices for running on slurm cluster and optimizing code for large cluster of CPUs/GPUs
  • Onboarding and managing content such as code repositories
  • Supporting researchers with research data management activities;
  • Tracking and monitoring research data management practice in the department;
  • Acting as a contact point for researchers for their ICT needs.

Requirements

Your experience and profile
You have:
  • an MSc in computer science or related discipline;
  • strong programming skills (e.g. as demonstrated by contributions to open source software);
  • a proactive and result-oriented attitude;
  • excellent communication skills and a supportive attitude.
The following skills are preferred:
  • Experience in research data management best practices (e.g. data citation, metadata, data publication, making data FAIR, data privacy);
  • Experience with Python and ML related-related libraries (scikit-learn, pytorch);
  • Experience with cloud and cluster computing;
  • A background working in a scientific or research environment.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week for a period of 12 months. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible. If we assess your performance positive, a permanent contract will follow.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 2,960 to € 4,670 (scale 10). This does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance the UvA offers. The UFO profile ICT Developer 3 is applicable. For this position we can not sponsor a visa. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.
