Job description

You will perform research related to the status of energy storage system (ESS) viz. batteries within the application of maritime systems. Your work on lifecycle modelling and testing of these systems, along with accurate monitoring, should enable a better understanding of ESS parameters (e.g., capacity, internal resistance, ac-impedance, etc.). This includes studying the impact of varying environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, pressure, humidity, etc.) that mimic real maritime conditions. The overall goal of your research is to extend the lifetime of ESS while assuring safe operation by monitoring parameters. This is achieved by proposing a state-of-safety (SOS) for maritime systems.

The project is financed by the Zero-emission and Circular Shipping call of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) in the domain of power electronics within the PE (Power Electronics and EMC) group. You will carry out the research at the University in Enschede, The Netherlands, and experienced supervisors (Dr. Prasanth Venugopal, Prof. Thiago Batista Soeiro) will support you with daily supervision. Collaboration is an important aspect of the PhD position, with TU Delft and TU Eindhoven as partners of the project. In addition, you will work in close collaboration with Nederlandse Defensie Academie (NLDA) and a wide span of stakeholders such as DMO, Nedstack, DAMEN, MARIN, RHMarine, EST-Floattech, Wärtsilä, Praxis Automation, Skoon Energy, Port of Den Helder, Fugro, Van Dam Shipping etc.
Teaching activities will take 10%-20% of your time.
