Job description

Founded in 1614, the University of Groningen enjoys an international reputation as a dynamic and innovative institution of higher education offering high-quality teaching and research. Flexible study programmes and academic career opportunities in a wide variety of disciplines encourage the 36,000 students and researchers alike to develop their own individual talents. As one of the best research universities in Europe, the University of Groningen has joined forces with other top universities and networks worldwide to become a truly global centre of knowledge.

The Faculty of Arts is built on a long-standing tradition of four centuries. Our mission is to be a top-ranking faculty with both an excellent education and world-quality research, with a strong international orientation, firmly rooted in the North of the Netherlands. We build and share knowledge benefits to society. We work at a modern, broad and international institution, educating over 5000 Dutch and international students to become forward-looking, articulate and independent contributors to society. We are a collegiate and diverse group of 700 staff members.

The Chairgroup of Modern English Literature and Culture invites applications for a temporary Lectureship (teaching only) in Modern English literature (0.75 FTE, fixed-term for 1 year).

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and co-teach a number of courses from our Modern English literature offering (post-1550) at undergraduate level, including a survey module, a module on World Literatures and a module on composition and, and at post-graduate (MA) level, a research tutorial. BA courses have existing syllabi and, in a number of cases, outlines of individual classes. Most importantly, the candidate will have to demonstrate experience in the supervision of BA and MA theses on a wide variety of topics related to literature in English post 1550. (For North American applicants: the teaching will amount to the equivalent of a 3-3 load per annum.)
The successful applicant will be required to teach classes in person throughout the academic year, though some courses may be taught in a hybrid online and physical environment. English is the only language of instruction in the Department.

The duties of teaching administration are limited to planning and assessing student work and to holding an office hour each week.
