Job description

This position puts you at the forefront of urban energy innovation. With an extensive portfolio of ongoing and completed projects, AMS Institute is looking for a program developer focused on connecting ongoing challenges with concept development at AMS. And who is able to attract relevant research funding to expand impact opportunities. Your goal is to make impact in the energy transition for the Amsterdam metropolitan region. In coordination with your fellow program developer Urban Energy, you are committed to the Urban Energy Program.

The AMS Urban Energy Programma

The AMS Urban Energy program aims to develop integrated solutions for sustainable systems for heating, cooling, mobility and electricity in the existing and developing urban environment. Working on the innovative concepts for sustainable heating and cooling systems such as aquathermy in quay walls or data center heat, large-scale heat demand reduction and integration into the electricity grid, the program aims to develop concrete solutions for the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.

What will you work on?

You will work as part of the AMS Research and Innovation team, aiming to connect energy science with society. Your focus is on energy retrofitting and urban heating and cooling systems. You will be responsible for:

  • Identify trans- and multidisciplinary research funding such as NWO NWA, RVO MOOI, Horizon Europe, and co-develop projects that combine AMS learnings, research propositions and competences. Integrate AMS as a strategic partner of projects to maximize impact. 
  • Identify local investments for energy retrofitting and heating and cooling systems with local stakeholders. Validate research agenda with local stakeholders in line with planned investments. 
  • Integrate into the Urban Energy program with circular economy research, indoor and outdoor climate developments and resilience research and responsible data driven practices in collaboration with AMS CURe, CRC and AMS Responsible Urban Digitization programs. Examples of such crossovers include a circular approach to energy retrofitting materials or development of heating and cooling networks in urban heat islands.

Profile

The program developer is motivated to make a sustainability contribution to the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. You have a proactive attitude to concretize cooperation with partners in projects to create change. Through your analytical thinking skills and creativity you are able to shape integral projects, combining to different research themes with case driven solutions.

Qualifications and experience

  • University level with MSc/MA or PhD in relevant subject;
  • 3-6 years’ work experience at an engineering firm or working on sustainable design and construction or energy engineering of the built environment
  • Excellent command of the English language and good command of the Dutch language.
  • Familiarity with grant opportunities and conditions

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: with prospect of extension.

Working conditions

  • The employment contract is 1 year, with prospect of extension
  • 32-40 hours per week
  • A salary with a minimum of € 4.800,- and a maximum of € 5.500,- gross per month based on a full working week (40 hours)
  • 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%
  • An excellent pension scheme through the ABP
  • 200 hours of leave per year (at 40 hours)

Department

The Research & Innovation team (20 people) is managed by the Director of Innovation. The Institute is led by a three-person board, a scientific director, a general director and a director of innovation. In this position you will work intensively with the Program Developers, Principal Investigators and Research Fellows of the AMS Institute, with the partners involved in the projects and with policy makers from the Municipality of Amsterdam and MRA.
