Job Description

The Photonic Integration (PHI) research group as part of the Electrical Engineering Department performs research and education in the field of integrated photonics. Our research is aimed at finding innovative solutions to the challenges in sensing, computation and information transport with photonics. This video tells you more about the role of integrated photonics today and in the future. We cover the complete range of activities from the design, simulation, fabrication up to characterization and measurement of photonic devices and circuits. In addition, the PhI group plays a key role in the photonics education programs at TU/e and has intensive links to industrial partners, among others ASML, Prodrive, Microsoft, Smart Photonics, Nvidia, TNO and PhotonFirst.

Due to recent collaborations in several larger research and development projects, the group is growing and with that the amount of measurement activities as well. Therefore, we are looking for someone to fill in a technical staff position supporting the measurement activities. Your role is to manage, maintain and extend the measurement facilities of the group. For that, you will be optimizing existing procedures and devising new methods to provide setup sharing and measurement access to group members. Furthermore, you are expected to skill-up, if needed, in basic photonic device characterization and support fellow researchers in building up specialized experimental setups. Lab activities will involve working with test and measurement setups, and the use of software such as python.

Responsibilities include:
  • maintenance of the setups and the measurement lab
  • perform assembly and packaging of photonic devices that are relevant to research and education
  • maintain inventory of lab equipment and source new equipment 
  • extend existing lab courses and create new measurement based education activities
  • introduce and guide students and researchers in performing measurement tasks
  • Additional project management tasks can be included if desired.

Requirements

  • A completed HBO/WO (university of applied sciences/university) degree.
  • Eagerness to learn about new systems, technologies and soft and hardware frameworks.
  • A diligent, structured and systematic way of working
  • Experience in hands-on work within a lab or similar environment
  • Working proficiency in both Dutch and English (or evidence that this will satisfy in near future).
  • The willingness to work in an international, multicultural environment.

Conditions of employment

  • A fixed term position for 1,0 fte for one year, with the intention, in case of proven suitability, to extend.
  • A monthly salary of minimum € 2.960 to maximum € 4.670 for full-time employment, depending on your knowledge and experience (scale 9 or 10 collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • In addition to vacation pay, a structural end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
