Job description

Cool and Clean Buildings
Rising outdoor air temperatures and more intensified heatwaves are exacerbating the overheating risk inside buildings. Furthermore, increased humidity, smog events and new pandemics threaten indoor air quality. This leads to a higher energy demand for cooling, ventilation and air cleaning, but also to increased heat stress, health problems and mortality. It is therefore imperative that our buildings, in which people spend nearly 90% of their time, are prepared for this. The long-term strategy of the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment therefore is to strengthen research and education into the optimization of healthy and sustainable buildings.

As assistant professor you will further develop and strengthen our research portfolio in indoor environment and climate change adaption strategies (under the framework of the TU Delft Climate Action Programme), for which you make use of the SenseLab and The Green Village as research facilities. Your focus will be on building strategies, to respond to both indoor and outdoor environmental quality-driven impacts, enacting the European renovation challenge of existing buildings. It revolves around three integrated perspectives: (1) humans and their health, behaviour and wellbeing (e.g. patterns & profiles for risk/opportunity modelling in buildings; indicators & assessment methods) (2) technology for healthy and sustainable buildings (products/components for health, comfort, and efficient implementation), and (3) integrated and holistic design (tools & processes for health, comfort, sustainability, affordability and efficient implementation)

Besides, you will teach in the portfolio of the department Architectural Engineering & Technology, which centres around building technology and design in our BSc program, in the MSc track Architecture and the MSc track Building Technology. A preference is to have fundamental expertise and an academic track record in the interaction of architectural engineering and physical, physiological and psychosocial sciences and affinity with technical applications like HVAC systems. All strong candidates in architectural and building engineering fields are encouraged to apply.

You will be hosted by the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, department Architectural Engineering & Technology, section Environmental & Climate Design, in the Indoor Environment group. You will work in close collaboration with the groups in this section and also with staff from civil engineering and electrical engineering (specifically, the groups Materials, Mechanics, Management and Design and Electrical and Sustainable Energy).
