Primary tasks

• to conduct high-level research in the field of criminal law and/or criminal procedure and sustain a strong publication record within the Research Programme 'Criminal Justice';
• to seek and contribute to seeking (external) research funding;
• to develop, deliver and coordinate courses in the regular Bachelor's programmes, the LL.M. programme 'Criminal law and Criminal Procedure' and/or the Msc. programme 'Comparative Criminal Justice';
• to supervise bachelor's theses and master's theses as well as essays and papers in the Master's programmes;
• to develop and deliver courses/lectures in the curriculum of postgraduate education for legal professionals;
• to cooperate in a collegial way in (managerial) activities of the Department, the Institute and/or Leiden Law School.

Requirements

• LL.M. degree with specialization in criminal law and/or criminal procedure;
• PhD degree in the fields of criminal law and/or criminal procedure or any related area;
• wide knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedure in all its aspects;
• a promising publication record;
• proof of excellent teaching abilities (for instance a University Teaching Qualification (BKO), student evaluations and/or references);
• preferably some experience with coordination and managerial activities;
• the ability and willingness to work collaboratively and collegially in a team;
• excellent language skills in English, both verbally and in writing. A good command of Dutch is considered an important asset as it is the department's daily working language. Therefore, staff members without a good command of Dutch are expected to be functionally fluent in Dutch within two years after starting the job;
• Expertise or experience in one of the following areas would be an asset:
  1. law on sanctions and/or penitentiary law;
  2. European criminal law;
  3. digital crime (cybercrime) and/or digital investigation;
  4. interdisciplinary and/or empirical legal research, for instance on the intersection between criminal law and criminology.

The Department is responsible for teaching in the Bachelor's programmes of Law and Criminology (both in Dutch) and also in the Master's programmes of 'Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure' (in Dutch), and 'Comparative Criminal Justice' (in English). Terms and conditions

• candidates will be appointed in accordance of the Collective Agreement of Dutch Universities, initially for a period of one year, with the expectation of being offered a permanent position after positive evaluation;
• the salary will be dependent on previous qualifications and experience, and ranges between € 3974.- to € 6181.- gross per month on a full-time basis (pay-scale 11 or 12);

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification. If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/ she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
