Job description

Are you eager to contribute to advancing the knowledge regarding the impact of teleworking and online-shopping on citizens travel behavior and as such on transportation demand in the living environment? Are you interested to support policy makers in drafting strategies and plans in order to use the digitalization of society in the benefit of citizens living environment?

In the last few decades, digitalization has impacted many sectors such as commerce, mobility and businesses. It is not clear to what extent the trend would continue in the future and how it would impact the transport demand and eventually supply in cities. Would they reduce congestion and emission or people replace the omitted trips with other types of travel demand. This project intends therefore to shed light on the potential of teleworking and online shopping for the mobility in the Netherlands. This is done by designing dedicated stated choice experiment.  A series of discrete choice models will be estimated on the basis of the collected data so that the probability of either type of activities (online vs. physical) will be estimated.  The results of the estimated models will be concatenated with the Dutch activity based model (Albatross) so the impact of online-shopping and teleworking on origin-destination matrix will be understood.

The project is funded by the Dutch ministry of infrastructure and water management and requires preparation of a series of deliverables.  The results of the project will contribute to the knowledge of the cities authorities regarding the future of Dutch citizens mobility pattern in light of digitalization of activities. By such knowledge informed planning and policies can be drafted to exploit the digitalization in the benefit of quality of living environment.

The research will be done in Urban Planning and Transportation Group.
