Job description

Responsible data management practice has become an important research skill. Researchers need support throughout the research data life cycle (collection, management, storage and publication). This job is about improving day to day practices in this field. The Faculty seeks a Data Steward within the Social Sciences domain for the Institute of Political Science (0.5 FTE) and for Faculty-wide RDM projects (0.3-0.5 FTE).

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who have affinity with Research Data Management (RDM) and the broader field of Open Science. The Data Steward will be engaged in hands-on data management activities and will advise researchers on how to handle data safely, ethically and sustainably. The Data Steward will also contribute to policy development. The Data Steward will liaise with research policy staff, management, researchers and members of the Ethics Committee. The Data Steward will take a proactive approach in establishing and maintaining contact with researchers and support units. The Data Steward will work closely with the Faculty's data manager, privacy officer, security officer and information manager, the data stewards at other Institutes and the colleagues at the Centre for Digital Scholarship.

Key responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:
  • Inform, advise and support researchers throughout the research cycle;
  • Contribute to the further development of the Institute's RDM procedures for an effective and efficient organization around the research cycle;
  • Identify and identify needs of researchers in terms of RDM and provide relevant input on this to the Faculty and central support units;
  • Encourage and monitor the implementation of RDM policies;
  • Contribute to the network of staff within the Faculty who are involved in RDM support;
  • Contribute to RDM projects within the Faculty.
Selection criteria
  • A motivated organizer with a completed university Master's degree, preferably in Political Science;
  • With experience or at least affinity with various research and data collection methods within Political Science in particular and with RDM in general;
  • With a reflexive and interpretative approach to data and data collection and an eye for ethical debates about the nature of data;
  • With an interest in developments in the field of data archiving (including relevant software), metadata, privacy (GDPR), Open Science and FAIR guidelines;
  • With an empathetic attitude and proactive, independent and meticulous work ethic;

Terms and conditions
We offer a fixed-term position for a period of one year. Salary range from € 2,960 to € 5,439 gross per month on a full-time basis (pay scale 10/11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
