Job description

The Nikhef Theory group has an opening for PhD position in theoretical particle physics

Nikhef is the Dutch national institute for subatomic physics. At Nikhef, approximately 190 physicists and 75 technical staff members work in an open and international scientific environment. Together, they perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics. The Nikhef institute is a collaboration between six major Dutch universities and the Dutch Foundation for Scientific Research (NWO). Among the research collaborations Nikhef participates are the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon-nT dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso, the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina and the eEDM research programme in Groningen. There are also scientific groups on Physics Data Processing and detector R&D.

The group
The interests of the Nikhef theory group (https://theory.web.nikhef.nl) include various aspects of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) such as resummation and jet substructure, parton distribution functions, effective field theories (in particular SMEFT), flavour physics, gravity, cosmology, and dark matter phenomenology. The Nikhef theory group and Nikhef as a laboratory provide a very stimulating environment with seminars, colloquia, journal clubmeetings, and discussions with the experimental groups.

Job description
The successful candidate will join the group of Dr. Melissa van Beekveld at Nikhef. The scientific focus of the position lies on acquiring a deeper understanding of resummation and parton showers, in particular next-to-leading-power resummation.

Requirements

Requirements
Applicants are required to have a Master degree (or equivalent) in physics and a good knowledge of Quantum Field Theory and the Standard Model. The ideal candidate preferably has knowledge of QCD and good programming skills (C++, mathematica and python).
Further information on this position can be obtained either from Dr. Melissa van Beekveld (m.van.beekveld@nikhef.nl) directly, or the head of the Nikhef theoretical physics group, Prof.dr. Robert Fleischer (robert.fleischer@nikhef.nl).

Conditions of employment

Offer details
The successful candidate will be employed by the NWO-I-foundation and will obtain the status of junior scientist. The candidate will receive a 4-year employment contract with a competitive salary. The conditions of employment of the NWO-I foundation are excellent, and can be found on the website of the employer: www.nwo-i.nl.

The PhD candidate will be member of the Dutch Research School of Theoretical Physics (DRSTP), offering a wide spectrum of activities. The starting date of the appointment is in the autumn of 2023.

Application submission
Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply by clicking the 'Apply Now' button below.
