Job description

The cohesion team, led by Job de Lange, studies multiple aspects of chromosome biology. You will be joining our ongoing research of the cohesin complex, focusing on how deregulation of cohesin functions affects disease etiology. This includes the construction of a range of suitable human cell models and performing functional studies related to the diverse functions of cohesin in different cell types. For relevant examples of recent work from our lab see:
  • Carvalhal et al (2022) Biallelic BUB1 mutations cause microcephaly, developmental delay and variable effects on cohesion and chromosome segregation. Science Advances 8(3) eabk0114
  • Van Schie et al (2020) Warsaw Breakage Syndrome associated DDX11 helicase resolves G-quadruplex structures to support sister chromatid cohesion. Nature Communications 11:1-18

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated researcher with:
  • Master of Science degree with a background in molecular biology and genetics;
  • A creative, flexible and problem-solving attitude and strong analytical and technical abilities, in addition to excellent communication and writing skills;
  • Significant knowledge of chromosome biology, as well as experience with CRISPR tools and iPSC culturing, are an advantage;
  • You are able to work independently and as a part of a multi-disciplinary, international team of scientists.
Candidates must comply with the following requirements:
  • Have not been resident or have conducted main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than 12 months within the last three years in the Netherlands;
  • Have not been awarded a doctoral degree;
  • Be fluent in English.

Conditions of employment

Salary scale: PhD (€2789 - €3536 gross per month based on a 36 hour week), depending on qualifications and experience.

The group is part of the Cancer Center Amsterdam and is embedded in the Oncogenetics research section, department of Human Genetics, Amsterdam UMC location VUmc. The project will be co-supervised by Dr. Rob Wolthuis and is part of a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Network (HE-MSCA DN) research project, entitled "Cohesin and its regulators: fom chromosome dynamics and nuclear architecture to human diseases". Hereby, you will benefit from a dedicated training program consisting of local and network-wide training activities aimed at improving scientific knowledge and transferable skills.
