Job description

The Faculty of Science / the Institute for Biology is looking for a:

Lab and project manager

Key responsibilities
Are you looking for a job in a scientific environment where you are responsible for the day to day running of different labs, where you can use your organization skills, and where you are still in touch with molecular and microbial lab work? Then we are looking for you! 
At the third floor of IBL, we are changing to a system with functional labs that will be shared by different research groups. We are looking for a new colleague that will be responsible for managing (50%) these labs, where we carry out molecular, microbial, plant, insect and soil research with a team of biologists, and to assist in managing (50%) a program where we aim to find new ways to control insect pests in glasshouses (NWA-ORC: Self Defense: Mimicking natural deterrent strategies in plants using adhesive spheres and volatiles). 

Lab management

  • Management of labs on third floor of IBL
  • Maintaining “good lab culture” in the different labs
  • Maintain equipment and make protocols for equipment
  • First point of contact for issues related to labs and climate cells
  • Give lab introductions to new students and lab users
  • Supervision of students working in the lab
  • Ordering supplies and consumables
  • Managing -80 vriezers and stocks

Project management

  • Planning and organizing project meetings and other activities
  • Making notes during meetings and distribute them to project partners
  • Collect information from project partners for reports
  • Participate in preparation of reports for NWO
  • Supervision of data-management, data storage and implementation of data-management plan
  • Assist in maintaining the project website and outreach activities

Requirements

Your profile 

  • Bachelor degree in relevant topic
  • Fluency in English (reading, writing and speaking).
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Solid personality and good social skills 
  • Experience in molecular biology/microbiology/plant-insect research
  • Experience in or affinity with project management
  • Team player

Conditions of employment

Terms and conditions  
We offer a full-time, fixed-term post from April 2023 until Sept 2025. Salary range from € 3.098 to € 4.670 gross per month (pay scale 9/10)  in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

The Institute for Biology
The research within the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) aims to work on the science base of biodiversity and health, which is reflected in our leading principle Harnessing Biodiversity for Health. We perform innovative curiosity-driven research to answer fundamental questions, and solutions-driven research to help solving major societal challenges. The latter include protecting nature’s biodiversity, creating sustainable biotechnology and agriculture and increasing good health.
