Job description

The Context
The Computer Science department of the University of Twente is expanding. Therefore, we are hiring 6 new faculty members, to strengthen our research in Artificial Intelligence, Cyberphysical systems and Software Engineering in the domains of (1) e-Health and (2) energy and sustainability. These new faculty members will be assigned in different research groups, but inter-group collaboration with other researchers working on these themes is considered essential to reach our overall ambitions. This position focuses on research in energy and sustainability of the computing continuum.

The Position
With the fast-paced digitization and digitalization of our society, the need for computing is steadily increasing. Digital services are nowadays available everywhere, from smart watches to mobile phones, and from cars to medical equipment. These services demand computing across the entire continuum, from device to datacenter. In turn, such computation becomes increasingly expensive in terms of energy consumption. With reports predicting that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will consume, by 2030, about 30% of the world energy, we cannot ignore the energy efficiency and sustainability of digital services. New approaches to quantify and ultimately reduce the energy consumption across the compute continuum are necessary. Moreover, effective resource orchestration is essential among computation and communication resources across the entire computing continuum, from device to datacenter.

With this new "energy-efficient compute continuum" position, we aim at holistic fundamental research on quantifying and improving the energy efficiency and sustainability of the computing continuum. We foresee a focus on computation and communication improvement by exploring, for example, novel methods for infrastructure and application co-design, new distributed algorithms with tunable performance-to-energy tradeoffs, energy-aware mapping and implementation of digital services and applications on the compute continuum, and self-adaptive systems with limited resources and/or energy budgets.

The embedding in Centre for Networked Systems and Intelligence (EDGE)
The Centre for Networked Systems and Intelligence (EDGE) from the University of Twente is composed of three groups - CAES (Computer Architecture for Embedded Systems), DACS (Design and Analysis of Communication Systems) and PS (Pervasive Systems). Together, we focus on high-quality fundamental and applied research towards improving the computing continuum. Specifically, CAES focuses on co-designing computer systems at different scales, for different requirements and specific constraints. DACS targets the development of responsible communication networks, in terms of resilience, security, and sustainability. PS addresses the design and analysis of systems composed of a network of collaborative sensing, computational, and reasoning components. We further collaborate closely with data scientists from the DMB group and strive to design and build usable systems in collaboration with the HMI group.

The ideal candidate has a successful track record in the design, analysis, prototyping, and/or modeling of different computing and/or communication systems, has experience with applied research and empirical analysis, and has experience with deploying applications on real systems and/or simulators. Experience with cloud- and/or edge-computing, large-scale computer systems, or performance and energy models is an advantage.

The candidate is expected to contribute to the bachelor education in Technical Computer Science, and to the master programmes in Computer Science and Embedded Systems. Such contributions include teaching and supervision of BSc, MSc, and PhD theses.
