Job description

As a researcher, you conduct excellent (meta-)research on (novel) qualitative & quantitative or mixed methods applied to the social sciences. We encourage the candidate to collaborate with (substantive) researchers in our School and others to apply the new methods and provide advice on the design and implementation of qualitative and mixed-methods research studies.

 

As a lecturer, you teach general and specialist courses in social science research methodology to multi-disciplinary groups of (bachelor and research master) students of social sciences programs to which our department contributes. Teaching includes coordinating one or two courses, teaching lectures and tutorials, and supervising research internships, bachelor theses, and master theses. The position also involves contributing to management.

Requirements

We are looking for a talented researcher with an ambitious research agenda and a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher in qualitative & quantitative social science research methodology. The successful candidate should demonstrate experience with qualitative research methodology. Experience that builds upon mixed methods combining qualitative and quantitative methods is a plus. The research agenda of the candidate should reflect this expertise as well. Furthermore, we expect the successful candidate to have sufficient expertise in quantitative research methods at the level of teaching introductory courses in the bachelor programs of our department.


Candidates have a (nearly) completed PhD and an excellent (early career) track record in publishing research findings in recognized scientific journals on qualitative or mixed-methods research. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with demonstrable experience in (co-)teaching a large-scale course and supervising students. We expect the candidate to hold or acquire the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ, in Dutch: BKO) and good command of English (C2 level).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months with possible permanent contract (tenure).

We offer an employment contract for 18 months during which you should show your competence in research and education. After a positive assessment of your performance, this will be converted into a permanent contract (tenure). Depending on the candidates’ experience, the salary for the position ranges between €3.821 and €5.943 gross per month based on scale 11-12 of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) Dutch Universities. 

 

Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The university offers very good fringe benefits, such as an options model for terms and conditions of employment and excellent reimbursement of moving expenses.

Department of Methodology and Statistics
The Department of Methodology and Statistics conducts excellent research in methods and statistics applied to social and behavioral sciences and is responsible for teaching methodology and statistics in the Bachelor and Research Master programs of the School. The department is a member of the Interuniversity Graduate School for Psychometrics and Sociometrics (IOPS) and participates in the Tilburg Experience Sampling Center (TESC), the Center of Research on Psychology in Somatic diseases (CoRPS), and the Data Science Center Tilburg (DSC/t). Its research program fosters cutting-edge research on the development and application of a diversity of methods (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods) and the study of scientific research practice (meta-research) for the social and behavioral sciences. The department has a strong tradition of working with our School's other (substantive) social and behavioral science research programs.
