Job description

The Maastricht Science Programme is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated lecturer in physics and mathematics to join our dynamic international team.  

The Maastricht Science Programme (MSP) is a highly selective bachelor’s degree programme in the natural sciences, situated in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Maastricht University in the Southern Netherlands. As one of the most international universities in Europe, Maastricht University is consistently ranked in the top ten of universities younger than 50 years worldwide.

At MSP, we follow the tradition of the Liberal Arts and Sciences, with an emphasis on student-centred learning in a small-scale college-community. Our student-centred learning is characterized by the opportunity for students to build their own curriculum in the natural sciences, intensive staff-student interactions in small groups, community building, extracurricular activities and personal guidance. The programme is taught in English.

The Maastricht Science Programme has currently more than 750 students from over 50 countries enrolled.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a lecturer with a PhD in Physics, Physics Education, Mathematics or a related discipline. You should have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. Interest in educational innovation or experience in an undergraduate LAS College setting would be considered an asset. You have an excellent track record, which reflects a strong commitment to science education, especially at an undergraduate level. You have an excellent command of written and spoken English. Those with a multidisciplinary interest who are willing to cross boundaries between scientific disciplines, are especially encouraged to apply. You conduct high-quality research in physics or mathematics topics involving Undergraduate students where possible.

You will be responsible for developing and teaching physics and mathematics courses and skills, supervising project-based student research, and supervising bachelor thesis research. You will co-coordinate and teach our introductory physics module for first year students. You will become an active part of our community, advising students, coordinating parts of our programme, organizing activities, building a scientific and educational network for our students to explore, and establishing contacts with other faculties within Maastricht, the Netherlands and across the world. You are stimulating and approachable for students and will readily interact with colleagues within Maastricht University and with other knowledge and business partners.

Conditions of employment

What do we offer in return?

  • A lecturer position (level depending on qualifications).
  • Initially a temporary 1-year contract. Depending on performance, a permanent position is possible. Highly qualified candidates will be considered for a permanent position immediately.
  • The gross monthlyh salary is from € 2,960 to a maximum of € 5,439 (with full-time appointment) depending on experience and qualifications.
  • An international academic environment and student community.
