We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group as part of the REGENERATE project, a large consortium aimed at improving the reliability of linear actuators.

About the REGENERATE project

Linear electromagnetic actuators are used in high-tech motion systems. They for example enable the positioning of wafers with nanometer precision in lithography machines. Increasing requirements on actuator acceleration and precision have led to higher mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal stresses and non-recoverable failures. Actuator reliability has therefore become a major concern, but failure mechanisms are currently poorly understood. In this multidisciplinary project we study the main failure mechanisms of actuators, using models ranging from the atomistic to the mechanical scale combined with experimental measurements. The outcomes are used to improve future linear actuator systems and reliability at partners ASML and Tecnotion.

As part of our ongoing research, our group has plans and funding to advance the state-of-the-art in the domain of actuator reliability and resilience over the next decade. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will have the opportunity to make valuable contributions and learn alongside your colleagues through accompanying development opportunities.

About this position

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting reliability tests of linear actuators, including accelerated aging of insulation under high voltage (reaching several kV), replication of high slew rate voltages, thermal, electrical, and other mechanical stresses. The tests will be performed to observe the influences of manufacturing defects and coil geometries on insulation breakdown.
The design of testbenches, samples and the measurements themselves will be made in close cooperation with academic and industrial partners (ASML and Tecnotion). The lifetime measurements will be performed in collaboration with the partners and support by highly experienced engineers and technicians. A new lifetime measurement setup will be built to accommodate for the testing of coil samples and actuator assemblies with different geometrical and material variations. Several samples will be manufactured and tested to establish statistical significance.

Requirements

  • Motivated researcher, with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • Knowledge of accelerated aging techniques and reach experience with the scientific work in the lab.
  • Strong experience in the design and execution of reliability tests on electrical machines or related components.
  • The experience with hardware such as drying kilns, climatic chambers or vibration tables but also handling large measurement datasets is a significant advantage.
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research, reflected in demonstratable outputs, eager to publish.
  • A team player who enjoys coaching PhD and Master's students and working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
  • A proven ability to manage complex projects to completion on schedule and reporting your findings with the team.
  • Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English, good communication and leadership skills.
