Job description

University College Roosevelt invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Biomedical and Life Sciences. We seek scholars with experience in undergraduate teaching in biomedical and life sciences, whose qualifications and interests build upon existing departmental strengths. Committed to attracting and retaining a diverse faculty, our community will honor your experiences, perspectives and unique identity.

For our Department of Science and Engineering, we are looking for an engaged and passionate lecturer in the Biomedical and Life Sciences at Assistant Professor level who believes that teaching and learning is at the heart of the university. The Department of Science and Engineering offers fourteen undergraduate tracks in natural sciences and engineering (Biomedical Science, Life Science, Chemistry, Cognitive Science, Ecology, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronics, Physics, Energy and Flow, Sustainable Materials, Earth and Environmental Science, and Engineering Projects). A successful candidate will bring a commitment to enriching and strengthening the Biomedical and Life Science tracks and bring enthusiasm, innovation, and commitment to teaching and curriculum development. The Biomedical and Life Sciences courses are given in the framework of UCR’s premedical program. The majority of the students in this program want to continue their studies in a medical master’s program at a Dutch or foreign university. A number of students are also preparing for a master’s in medical biology, epidemiology, or a health care related discipline. The courses to be given include, apart from introductory courses in the life sciences, courses in human anatomy, human physiology, pharmacology, mechanisms of disease, pathology and genetics. Expertise in at least a number of these fields will be required.

All courses are taught in English. For students preparing for master entrance exams in the Netherlands, preparatory sessions will be given in Dutch. Local, national and international network contacts are needed in order to be able to organize internships for the students. Additional responsibilities of the position include student supervision and participation in the activities of the college. Research at UCR is strongly focused on strengthening and innovating teaching and learning. Engagement in more fundamental research is done in association with research institutes at Utrecht University and other universities.

Employer

University College Roosevelt (UCR) is one of the international honors colleges of Utrecht University, one of the leading universities in the Netherlands and in Europe. UCR was founded in 2004 with a campus in the heart of the historic city of Middelburg (Zeeland). UCR offers a Liberal Arts and Sciences program of high quality with approximately 200 courses from three academic departments (Arts and Humanities, Social Science, and Science and Engineering) - all delivered in English. We allow students to construct their own bachelor’s program, based on their interests, strengths, and passions, whilst enabling them to continue to top master’s programs all over the world. At UCR, classes are never larger than 25 students and include continuous assessment as well as a high level of interaction with fellow students and instructors. Instructors have great freedom in designing their courses, and work within an environment that firmly has teaching as its priority, whilst also supporting undergraduate and faculty research. UCR is a residential college, and therefore a small and tight-knit community consisting of approximately 600 students from all over the world and a small number of dedicated faculty and staff (of in total around 75 colleagues). All students live, learn, and socialize on a small, residential, inner-city campus where they form a highly active student body.
