Job description

Research group
The Inflammation and Cancer group of dr. Karin de Visser studies the impact of the immune system on breast cancer metastasis and response to anti-cancer therapies by utilizing sophisticated mouse tumor models and state-of-the art ex vivo and in vitro immunological and molecular assays.

Project
Primary breast tumours induce neutrophil expansion which we, and others, have shown to promote metastatic spread. In this project we aim to provide novel mechanistic insights into how breast tumors manipulate the phenotype and function of neutrophils in tumour-bearing hosts, leading to the generation of pro-metastatic neutrophils. To address this aim, molecular, mechanistic and intervention studies will be performed in preclinical mouse models of primary and metastatic breast cancer. In parallel, we will perform validation studies using patient samples.

Your task will be to perform experiments that provide insight into how tissue specification of neutrophils in tumour-bearing hosts impacts the development of a metastasis permissive environment, use intervention studies to understand if we can reverse pro-metastatic neutrophil functionality along with validation studies using patient blood samples. Your analysis will provide critical understanding of how neutrophils promote metastatic spread and how this functionality can be reversed which may ultimately contribute to the design of novel therapeutic strategies to reduce metastatic spread.
