Job description

Eindhoven University of Technology is a relatively young university, founded in 1956 by Industry, local government and academia. Today, this spirit  of collaboration is still at the heart of the university community. Our campus is located at the center of one of the most powerful technology hubs in the world: Brainport Eindhoven. This hub stands out when it comes to collaborating with industries and governmental agencies; it forms a thriving ecosystem with one common aim - to improve quality of life through sustainable innovations. It is a place where we combine scientific curiosity with a hands-on mentality.

Built Environment is one out of nine departments, and houses a unique wide spectrum of disciplinary knowledge in the fields of architecture, urbanism, civil engineering and technology (e.g. structural design, building physics and material science). We act at various levels of scale, from materials to buildings and subsequently to cities, whereby we pay attention to the impact of design and technology on humans. This diversity profiles us, and we cherish it.

The department employs about 260 academic staff members, including approximately 190 PhDs, EngDs and Postdocs, organized over four disciplinary units. Scientists within the units are encouraged to team up over the borders of their own field of expertise via cross-disciplinary research and education, and work on contemporary, technologically relevant themes, such as the energy transition and sustainability.

Vacancy Profile

Extremely large amount of data is available regarding real time (private and public) vehicle  positions, aggregate traffic conditions, real time states of infrastructure, route planning recommendation (to drivers who use such system), position of sharing services in the network, availability of parking areas, accidents and in the future information about the presence of Autonomous Vehicles in the network. To overcome the challenges cities are facing such as emission and congestion it is vital that this substantial amount and diverse (in nature) of data to be collectively and simultaneously used to optimize the usage of services and infrastructure by giving the right people, right types of advice at right times and right places and update the system in real time given citizens' reaction (to the recommendation). This will likely lead to the decreased demand for transport infrastructure (roads, parking) and allows valuable land in cities to be instead used for other functions such as greenery and/or community based facilities. In other words, the purpose is to build a system which can optimize the traffic network system by collecting real time information mentioned above  and providing recommendation to the drivers (as close to their preference as possible respecting their temporal and spatial constraints) in terms of mode choice, route choice, destination choice, departure time and activity duration. The system also enables the traffic infrastructure to be adjusted in real-time to maximize the efficiency of traffic. To enable a smooth human interaction with such a complex dynamic system, the complementarity purpose is processing and visualizing all information on a digital twin of cities to facilitate the communication among parties and understanding of such system for city planners and policy makers. In the future when AV would be part of the urban fleet (mixed fleet), having such a system in place encompassing real time information of manual cars, AV and states of infrastructure,  would guarantee higher level of safety by communicating information to relevant parties (drivers, AV, infrastructure and transport service providers).
