PhD Position Robust Eco-Efficient Aircraft Routing

PhD Position Robust Eco-Efficient Aircraft Routing

Published Deadline Location
25 Apr 5 Jun Delft
Challenge: Develop robust eco-efficient aircraft routing.
Change: Incorporating climate impact in flight routes robustly.
Impact: Dramatically reduce the overall climate impact of aviation.

Job description

The climate impact of aviation is not just defined by the sector’s carbon dioxide emissions, but also by the formation of warming contrails, the nitrogen oxides induced ozone formation and methane depletion. And as the sector keeps growing, securing long-distance mobility, it is crucial to significantly reduce aviation’s total climate impact by optimising flight routes. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team and you will conduct research to minimising aviation’s climate impact as a PhD candidate at TU Delft. The mitigation options are expected to consider the interdependencies of different climate forcers while incorporating uncertainties associated with individual climate forcer. Your work will be part of the EU-funded CONCERTO project, which aims to reduce aviation’s climate impact via operational improvements and enables you to discuss your ideas and solution with various stakeholders.

You will further develop the current air traffic optimization routines as a part of a climate model to address uncertainties. This improved model will enable you to devise air traffic optimisation strategies and implement those in the air traffic simulator and analyse the atmospheric response. To gain insights and align your research with other studies, you’ll work closely with the CONCERTO project partners, including leading weather forecasters, research institutes, an air traffic management company and research simulation specialists.

In addition, you will coach bachelor and master students and supervise their projects. As a PhD candidate, you will also receive all the training you need to evolve. Your homebase will be the Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects group, where you’ll be joining our friendly, highly motivated and supportive team of six Professors, two Postdocs and some thirty PhD students. We share a mission to reduce the environmental impact of aerospace operations, while improving safety and efficiency. Ours is an open-minded, inspiring and friendly atmosphere, in which you’ll exchange knowledge and ideas.
