Job description

The Chair of Financial Accounting & Reporting is a core chair within Nyenrode’s Faculty Research Center for Corporate Reporting, Finance & Tax.

Financial accounting & reporting encompasses the study of the reporting of the financial position and performance of a firm through financial statements issued to external users on a periodic basis. It also includes bookkeeping, which is the technical process before the financial statements are set up. Financial accounting & reporting has its roots in accounting law and accounting standards (Dutch GAAP and IFRS) and business economics (e.g. historical costs and fair value concepts, discounting techniques and valuation models). The main differences with management accounting are that the information is not form-free and less periodic and primarily directed to external users, e.g. investors instead of the board of directors of the firm.

The research will focus on capital market-based accounting research, earnings management and the relationship between financial information and auditing. Decision usefulness in terms of reliability and relevance of financial accounting information is key to the research in this field.

Financial accounting & reporting is a heartland academic discipline in education at every business university like numerous other disciplines and is one of the most important disciplines for auditors and controllers.

The chair provides courses and workshops for the accountancy degree programs (BSc, MSc, and post-Master/RA), the controlling degree programs (MSc and EMFC/RA), tax degree programs (LL.M. and MSc), PhD programs, MBA programs, and executive education programs. In these programs, courses aiming at a diversity of financial accounting & reporting aspects, including Dutch GAAP, IFRS, financial statement analysis, accounting for not-for-profit organizations, and bookkeeping are provided on different levels. Students learn theories related to financial accounting & reporting like the agency theory, concepts, tools and (accounting) techniques and how to apply them in the field of financial accounting & reporting. The transfer of state-of-the-art research and theories into daily practice is an important aspect of the didactical philosophy of the Faculty Research Center for Corporate Reporting, Finance & Tax.

The complexity of recording, reporting according to accounting standards, understanding, and analyzing and auditing financial accounting information requires an extension of current knowledge and the translation into new concepts, tools, and accounting techniques for (part-time) students and practitioners. The chair of Financial Accounting & Reporting will focus on these aspects and will further explore collaborations with other faculty research centers of Nyenrode, especially the Faculty Research Center for Accounting, Auditing & Control.

The chair will collaborate on research and education with (inter)national institutions as the Dutch Accounting Stardards Board  (Raad voor de Jaarverslaggeving; RJ), the Dutch professional accountancy body (Koninklijke Nederlandse Beroepsorganisatie van Accountants; NBA), the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), other universities, audit firms and companies to contribute to the national and international ambitions of Nyenrode Business Universiteit.
