The Department of Media and Communication and the Erasmus Research Institute for Media, Culture, History and Society (ERMeCHS) are looking for two Junior Lecturers - PhD Candidates (50% / 50%) in Media & Communication (1.0 FTE, 6 years).

Job description

We are looking for two highly motivated Junior Lecturers - PhD Candidates who seek to conduct their PhD research in the context of the research in Media & Communication carried out at the department, as well as teach within the context of the various degree programmes in the field of Media and Communication provided by the ESHCC.

As a Junior Lecturer - PhD Candidate of the Erasmus Research Institute for Media, Culture, History and Society (ERMeCHS) you will have ample opportunity to collaborate with renowned academics with an international and interdisciplinary approach. We invite you to propose your own research project related to one or more of the research themes and clusters in ERMeCHS. This research project will be developed under the responsibility of a supervisor/promotor of the department.

Teaching duties (50%)

•         Preparing and providing lessons within the context of the various degree programmes in the field of Media and Communication provided by the ESHCC;

•         Monitoring the literature and integrating new insights into the lessons;

•         Supervising and coaching students;

•         Contributing to the evaluation of the lessons, both in terms of structure and execution;

•         Participating in committees or working groups, as well as performing designated organisational tasks.

Research and management duties (50%)

•         Conducting PhD research;

•         Data collection and data analysis;

•         Publishing and presenting research results in the form of articles in international peer reviewed journals and papers at international conferences;

•         Writing a dissertation within the appointment duration of six years;

•         Defending the dissertation to complete the doctoral degree;

•         Performing organisational tasks in the context of ESHCC, in particular with regard to the Department of Media and Communication;

•         Taking part in seminars, workshops, etc. that are organised by the Erasmus Research Institute for Media, Culture, History and Society (ERMeCHS) as well as the research schools and scholarly associations of which ERMeCHS is part.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline of humanities or social science (such as communication science, media studies, cultural studies, sociology, business / management / economics; a research master’s degree is preferred;
  • Knowledge of and affinity with one or more of the main subject areas of our research and teaching: media and creative industries; production, distribution and consumption of media and digital entertainment; media and communication management; digital media technologies; organizational and corporate communication; digital marketing; media entrepreneurship;
  • A broad knowledge of key theories and perspectives in the field of media and communication;
  • A broad knowledge and mastery of common quantitative and/or qualitative research methods in media and communication, as evidenced by your master’s thesis, publications, research plans and other projects;
  • Organisational experience and skills;
  • Didactic potential. Prior teaching experience is considered an advantage;
  • A willingness to develop knowledge and skills in various disciplines and to increase the ability to teach related subjects within the faculty’s degree programme;
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers must meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF).

Conditions of employment

An internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The start date of this position is preferably before September 1st, 2023. The research component of the position will initially be for a term of 2,5 years, which - depending on performance – will be extended with a second term of 3,5 years.

The position is for 1,0 fte. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 2.960 to a maximum of € 4.670 gross per month on a fulltime basis, in accordance with Scale 10 of the CAO-NU. In addition, we offer an 8% holiday allowance, an end-of-year payment of 8.3%, and a very generous paid leave scheme. The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) offers education and research in the fields of Media and Communication, History, and Arts and Culture Studies. The faculty has approximately 2400 students and 220 employees.

Media and Communication Department

The Media and Communication Department is a dynamic, internationally oriented department within the ESHCC. The department offers five international degree programmes: the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM), four international Master’s programmes in Media Studies (Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media, Culture & Society, Digitalisation, Surveillance & Society) and the Research master in the Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. The department has close ties with ERMeCHS, the Erasmus Research Institute for Media, Culture, History and Society.
