Designing and operating an efficient heat network is difficult due to the uncertainty in heat supply/demand and interaction with electricity. This collaborative research project aims to model and devise optimal investments.

Job description

The collaborative and climate-focused research project COM2HEAT is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, with a strong consortium with multiple companies and knowledge institutes. The project’s aim is to advance research and technology in heat energy ecosystems. We focus on the design, production, installation and operation of collective heating systems built entirely of composite material. The system aspects of this project are cross-company and sector-wide. Stakeholders from the value chain work together in this unique consortium; the end users, the design and service companies, the composite manufacturing companies and academics. A top-down framework of system requirements will be developed and then the essential subsystems and components will be developed with necessary new manufacturing technology. The composite subsystems are functionally tested and then integrated in Rijswijk and Schiebroek to test the physical interfaces and perform system flow tests.
We will be responsible for modeling and forecasting the supply-demand matching of the heat network, considering its multi-stage nature and the potential uncertainties that may arise. This research will allow us to make informed decisions about optimal investments, including determining the most appropriate pipe capacities and placements, as well as operational decisions such as energy routing. Additionally, understanding the interaction of the heat system with other sectors, especially electricity, is of critical importance.

Your main tasks
  • Develop models
  • Implement results
  • Write academic papers and reports
  • Attend meetings and co-ordinate with consortium members
